Mixing your mieliebom at home.

Is it a bad idea to use sprite or perhaps something else to prepare your mieliebom at home? Reason is I want to get the lines in the water as soon as possible. Are there too many additives or so in Sprite that may chase the fish away?

Additives in a 8 hour fishing session don't ever make a difference.

The only thing I occasionally mix in is well boiled Hemp seed or tinned Mielies.

When we stop at the water first thing we do is mix the feed. Put it one side and set up your kit to fish. When you are finished you feed will be ready.

At the Junior SA Champs we always make all the feed for the 7-11am fishing session for the kids before we leave the accommodation

When we get to the water everything is ready to go. When they're down to 3/4 of that feed we make the next batch so they always have fresh feed available

Thanks Enigma. I will give the Sprite a go then. My rods and stuff are locked at our fishing spot, ready for action, hence the need for pre-prepared mieliebom.

Why Sprite? Do you use Sprite when you at the dam?

Just use normal tap water at home. Is use tap water always, even of I am at the dam, dont want al that green or muddy water n my mieliebom. Will only use dam water if its very clean.

So yes just use tap water at home before you go, but dont do it the night before, you still want fresh feed.

I only use the dam water where I am fishing. The fish are swimming in the water that you will be making the feed with.

99% of the time, I will only use the water of the venue where I fish.

But, I do sometimes fish a private venue and have limited time. I will then prepare my feed at home just before I to drive to the venue. I then use water from my borehole, not from the tap. Tap water have chemicals which can scare the fish away.

I drink tap water so Im sure the chemicals in it should be ok. The dips that you put on your mieliebom contains spirits, tcp and all kinds of chemicals and concentrates, so i cant see how in the world a bit off tap water is going to make any difference

Nothing wrong with sprite to make your bom with if time is a problem and you don't have dam water.

Jean Claude I disagree I can most of the time smell strong chlorine in my normal tap water plus I have a fish tank and if I replace my water without treating it my fish die within a hour or 2. That will chase the fish away.

I am sure if you fill your fishtank with spirits, tcp or even honey your fish will die in 2s. Duiwelsdrek? Moirs almond? Fill it with any of your dips and they wont last 5s.

Jean Claude is more correct here...... I watched an angler boil water to get rid of Chlorine only to add a cap of almond essence to 10ml of water to make an almond dough.

Tap water won't kill any aquarium fish...... change in temp from old water to the tap water temp will however kill them.

The 500ml of tap water in 1kg of feed into 500'000'000 liters of dam water won't have any effect on any fish.

We have medalled in every one of the past 10 Junior SA's and had 4 Individual champions and we make the whole teams fee at the camp with tap water before we go to the dam (that should be proof enough that tap water has ZERO effect on the fish.)

I have lost fish only once when changing water, I was told by a pet shop that its not just me that week. I was told that the municipality ''shock treat'' the water once in a while, adding more chemicals for a day. That was many years ago though.

I can confirm that I could not see a difference in the number of fish caught by using dam water, sprite or tap water. I have tried all three and really, it seems as if the fish do not mind it at all.

A little off topic but my tap water does kill my aquarium fish.
I have had Aquariums for my whole life and never have I lost fish like I do now if I don't use expensive water treatments and its not water temp/shock.
All I know is I wont use my tap water.

On the other side when I was younger i believed NEVER touch sunscreen whilst fishing now I could not care any less. I put on sunscreen before I start and whilst I fish and there is no difference.

Some people use a small drop of dip and others use half a bottle and they all catch fish.

Then we don't even talk about the Spirits and other funny stuff.

What I do know especially in the freezing cold if you can use warm water the bom will bind allot faster and better. What I use to do in the middle of winter is boil a flask of water at home and use 50 / 50 with dam water to make my bol bind better.

All I know is if you make your bom at home and blank once or twice and then next time you use dam water and catch a fish you will believe that was the culprit and in fishing confidence is only second to location

I also have two fishtanks. In a sense tap water do kill some of the fish. Some fish dont like the chlorine but its normally takes a day or two. Same as with adding salt to your aquirium water some fish likes it others die. Its is however not that simple. A fish tank with its filter developes an eco system with all kinds off nutrients etc. Thats why when you start a new tank they will normally suggest you dont put fish in for two weeks or maybe one sacrificial fish to get the system started. When I clean my tanks I keep half the old water and fill the rest with tap water and nothing happens to the fish. Every two months I do 20% water change aswell straight with tap water.
And tropical fish is much more sensitive than fresh water fish. The goldfish tank I dont even care about temp change, hosepipe full blast half tank with old water.

So according to me a bit of tap water will make no difference. Mix it just before I get in car and at venue when my buddies is still waiting for their mieliebom, my lines is in allready. Even worst in winter when you have frozen hands bfegore the first cast, because you had to mix mieliebom at the dam.
