[African Angler]

Hi Guys,

Has anyone fished Misty Lakes? I am going there later in the month and would appreciate any tips or advise.

Hey

Boilies work well. And then anything dipped, soaked, glugged in hemp oil also works well. Target the features.

Axle really appreciate the advise.

I generally prefer boilie fishing so i should enjoy that, though if i may ask for some advise regarding the feeding:

I have read that during the colder months the idea is not to overfeed i.e don't go feed 10kg's of boilies as the fish are not consuming that much etc. firstly what is your opinion on this and secondly if this is the case what would the correct approach be for September as it's inbetween winter and summer

Hi,

There is no need to overfeed. Just place a handfull of feed over your rigs.

Fish and fruit flavoured boilies worked best for me at Misty. For my ground feed I use a mixture of whole/crushed boilies, hemp, maize and wild bird seed.

Generally now is the time that they start feeding heavily as its just before spawn time, so they need to pick up that extra weight to have a successful spawn. I would try different amounts of feed for each rod. Try one heavily fed, one fed mediumly and another more mouse-trap style - see which one delivers the better result, then go with that approach.
Carp fishing is a strange old sport and what works one day might not work then next. I wouldn't be afraid to add one more handful of feed at that time of the year.

Hi Axle,

Water levels were very low (i could literally walk onto the island). I fished one rod to the left of the island,the other two by the dam wall and managed to land 11 fish with the biggest being 7.4kg, majority of the fish were round about the 6-7kg range, though i did land atleast 3 very small fish. There are plenty of fish in that dam though the size is an issue. The farmer mentioned that they will be doing an exercise in October to take the smaller fish out so we will see how that goes. I fished fruity and fishy flavours and had success on both. Struggled with the crabs though

Pleasure mate. I am sure you will get into some fish and hopefully size will be decent. Let us know if you do get anything over 8kg. BTW if it goes quite during the day and you are up for a little stalk, go to the dam wall side, you will get some runs there very near to the bank, i didn't get anything big but entertained myself with some small fish caught whilst stalking

That's exactly where I got my PB from Fished against the reeds and had a thunderous take. Fish actually got foul hooked but luckily I was close by.

Put in a session at swim 1 this past weekend. Had plenty runs and a lot of fun. I managed to land a common just shy of 10kg and two more at just over 8kg.

I also managed to land the smallest Carp in the dam. As usual quality fishmeal boilies balanced with a single artificial yellow maize produced the best results. I fed a mixture of hemp, maize and boilies over each rig mouse trap style. In my opinion most methods would have worked as the Carp were feeding actively.

Unfortunately my wife fell ill and we packed up on Saturday afternoon, cutting the session a day short.

Although the dam is not producing bigger trophy fish yet I am looking forward to another session there soon. It is a special place and an enjoyable weekend away.
