Remediation is possible for anything its just the cost thats a real issue, so it make sense not to stuff up the environment then try to fix it

True! Suppose if you throw enough money at it... I'm assuming they would rather close these dams off to the public before spending big bucks... This reminded me of another issue in Florida USA I think.... Somehow, someone convinced officials that a tyre dump site out at sea would make an awesome artificial reef/home for corals and tropical fish to colonize... I stand to correction on the exact facts but it was approved... here is a pic
