Methodology when Spinning

Good Morning Guys and Girls

So you've chosen the spot  where you are about to cast that first lure.....

1)Where does one start? Top water column,  along the bottom, subsurface, mid water column. What do most of you guys do when you arrive at a NEW spot that you've never fished before, what lure do you choose/use first?

Also, under what conditions does one use readhead rapalas/lures?
