Massive carp and barbel in hennops on MALBERRIES!!

Hey there!

We have a plot next to the Hennops river and every year when its malberry season things go insane!  We fish for carp and barbel under or near these trees anywhere from Rietvlei to past centurion, simply by waiting under trees for fish to surface and then placing a berry with a circle hook in the fishes region.

Ever sight fished for bass? well this is ten times better! seeing a 10kg+ carp take a berry gets the heart racing beeeeg time!! 

Its tempting to strike so once you tighten up you're in for some fun!! What i do is throw several berries in to see if there are fish in the area as they will surface immediately. Anyway here are some pics of what ive managed to bag, all these fish were relocated into our farm dam. I try to get all the fish i can out of the river as its disgusting!!

The big carp and all these barbel were caught in an early morning session on ripe berries! give it a go guys, super easy and even more fun! Tight Lines!

Klaar besig, ons het vir 3 jaar lank dam gebou en hy is nou vol vis, mooi groot vis te danke aan die hennops ek glo ook die vis het n beter lewe in ons dam al sit hy slegs 100m van die rivier af. die rivier is net nie meer wat hy was nie!

The River going trough the estate has produced a couple of lovely fish the past few years, just the river has gone into a bad state due o all the muck comming down with the rains.

Nice fish that.I would like to buy a game farm one day and build a massive dam.And then stock it with biggies for my children to catch one day!

Centurion lake is also largely to blame as its been stagnent for ages and you could literally walk across it because of all the sand that has been washed in ...... then comes the rains and washes all the gunk and mud downstream,used to be such a great lake.

My little brother fished the river this week for the first time in a while and he managed to bag 38 barbel and 4 carp in an afternoon session. The barbel all came out on kariba worms and carps on almond bread with a malberrie paste we make ourselves and freeze when they go out of season.

Don't know if you have had the same experiences but lately we have been catching un common species including bass an kurper in the river? the kurper are small but got 5 bass all over a kilo which is strange for the river although bass are present upsrteam at rietvlei but this was the first time weve had any come out.

By our bit of the river we have shoals of koi that swim through ranging from dark orange to yellow and weve managed to catch a few now, why do the koi swim seperately from the other carp? Heres a pic as proof.  some are up to 8 kgs!

heres a bass that my girlfriend caught with a mepps in the hennops in eldoraigne. all the bass, carp, koi, barbel, kurper are all in our dam now!

Daai twee karpies in die laaste foto lyk bietjie gehawend, het hulle so uitgekom ? Die rivier hier is nie juis skoon nie, onthou die onlangse vergiftiging...

Dis 'n redelike algemene verskynsel dat vis sommige vrugte eet.

Die twee carps het in die spawn uitgekom en van wat ek kon sien het hulle op n sand bank hulself so geskuur, dis toe ek hulle sien in die sand wat ek hulle met moerbye geflous het. Hulle het gesorg vir honderde klein karpies van alle kleure in ons nuwe dam. Ek gebruik nie n hounet nie want ek loop net 20 tree dan kan ek die vis in ons dam vry laat.

Oor die vergiftiging, dit was "shocking" om die minste te se! dooie visse die rivier vol! Dis darm nou weer beter , maar dit het ons nie verbaas nie, het al dooie beeste, skape en selfs 2 mense in ons rivier gekry wat in die vernouing vassteek.

En my meisie in die pic het bietjie meer werk gevat om te vang as die visse

Pringle, do yourself a favour and drive over the bridge by Irene and have a look at all the muck and foam in the river these days. I hate to see what the hell they dump in the river one can clearly see those are due to chemicals and the smell !!! Damn. I landed a albino barber over the weekend, ugly bugger. Might this be due to the water or is that natural ?

I actually grew up in irene, went to irene primary so i know exactly what section and bridge you are likely to be on about, i caught crabs and fish there after school everyday, cant say id do the same now though. Its disgusting!

 Our plot is near Swartkops racetrack and not too far from the townships so what washes up there is shocking! We have an annual cleanup where we get in our canoes and remove anything that shouldnt be there, everything from bottles to dead pets, you wont believe what people dispose of. Anyway the river somehow produces stunning fish and as for the albino barbel, thats just one in a million, perfect heredic combination of genes between the breeding adults, they often dont survive as they are easy prey for predators. Was it a sizer by any chance?

I cought an albino barbel in 2001 at Oranjeville of 12Kg.This is one in a million like you say.

its sad bru, i grew up in Valhalla and always went to go fish the river in Monrick AH.

 

Even in school holidays i used to go to work with my old lady and i'd fish Centurion Lake, when it was actually still a lake............. and used to catch there every day on Termites and dough.

jap can't exactly call it a lake anymore hey? more of a mud puddle with big ass barbel! theres more fish than water there lately! If you don't get snagged in trolleys or dead fish you get mugged, i now take pepper spray and tazer but its simpler staying on the malls side as theres security guards, who dont mind if you fish there funny enough, anyhow sad story all this.

Im not with you here, where did anyone say that the fish were killed?

I firstly use what i kill as i also hunt but i would not even eat a fish out the Hennops river if you payed me to. All fish pictured and literally hundreds more are still alive and swimming in our farm dams as i stated right from the start. I mean why kill what you dont need?

I didnt know that carp and barbel (Catfish) where being killed in south africa.. (Just for eating) Dont understand it.

Over here they are protected species.
