Maphelane

Good Day fisherman

Name is Mohammed, I need some help.

I am still a newbie, and need some advise

My Mates and I are planning a trip to Maphelane on the 19th of July, staying at the KZN national park,

I need to know how is the fishing around this time and if there are any spots in particular there that we can try.. and What bait to use. And where can I find out about tide information and weather ,

I need to know how is the weather and Tides around that time in July and if it's good for fishing

I also need directions to the spot from Johannesburg

and If you have any tips in general for me for the Mahphelane, or should I try another place in st lucha

 

I am searching the forum as well But I cant really find the page that tells me about fish in maphelane in July there is just to many pages

Maphelane is an awesome place.. try stay in the log cabins if you can they are right on the beach,,, eastuary and sea close walking distance... best to go to this link and click on Maphelane on the dot...I think Directions are on there too..www.kznwildlife.com/site/map.html

Otherwise, on the same map are some other options in that St Lucia Area, all within the protected reserve...

Hi Mo,
Great to fish, when the fish are on the bite.
As far as bait goes, I would take the following:
Chokka
Mackrel
Sards (red eyes if you can get them)
Pink prawn

Try and get a permit to drive on the beach, if you can and try the ledges on the rhs of the main Maphelane bay, good edible fishing.

If going for sharks/in-eds, try the main bay and lhs side of the main bay, look for troughs and rips and cast into those.

I was there about two weeks ago and the bay as well as crayfish point was very sanded and not conducive to sharks/rays. On the fuller water you might still get the edibles (esp. grunter and kob). The corner of the bay is very sheltered and should produce plenty of shad in the early mornings.

I would try and get hold of a permit to drive on the beach, that way you have a few more options as there are a lot of ledges that may be more productive (and less fished) further South.

I would look at targeting the edible fish. I would try and get hold of some good chocka, redeyes, and crayfish (if you can get your hands on it). Over the ledges on further south using this bait you will catch just about any edible that swims.

If you are really keen to try and get into some sharks, you can try the bay (there was a small hole halfway down the beach). I would use mackeral or bonnie. If the mullet are arround the a live mullet (a BIG one if you can get your paws on it). You could catch a Zambi or Black, with the formations that were there I dont think there will be to many Raggies.

Having said all of that, things can change very quickly on the beaches. Who knows maybe they have improved!!!

Yes been to maphelane 3 weeks ago was great we camp, it was very nice and the place is very clean and safe, patrol walking around in the night, just be aware of the road will take you around 1-2 hours from the n2 to the camp site the road is very bad more podholes than road.

The fishing wasnt very good maybe we wasnt their at the right time, got some in the lagoon and in the mouth, best place is on the leges to the right to crayfish point lot of small fish their ( streepies ) maybe if you can be at the mouth and get a live in when the tide start to go out you can get a big one, let the tide take it out, when it is high tide you should be able to get nice once in the lagoon.

The road to you must take is over Standerton and Vryheid and Empangene , their is a shop you can buy bait on the right as you trun on the Left on the N2, you can go over Bethal Ermelo Piet Retief Pongola also but the road between Piet Retief and Pongola you got and drive about 2 or more hours they busy rebuilding the road about 9 palce you must stop and wait about 10-20 minutes.

Make sure you get bait because sometimes the shop at maphelane dont have bait you can phone them on 0315901407, and take eveyting you need shop only got limited things. bait to use is sardine, chokka, seelice crayfish tail and prawn.

The wether can be a little iffy, but if you get it the right conditions (2 or 3 days of NE) with a fltish sea you can have some really good fun.

I would look at fishing after dark 2 hours eaither side of the high tide (if you are fishing in the bay). If you move south towords the ledges I would fish crayfish point over the low tide. More toword the Mteynai camp (I dont thin you will be able to drive that far though) tide is less of an issue and can be fished on any tide.

I prefure a dark night so that would mean a new moon, but if there is a little cloud cover i find it doesnt make any real difference. On a well lit night you will find the small fish will drive you nuts...
