As posted by plugger on the SardRun thread on Sunday 20th June: http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=39733&forum_id=1&page=10

"Son two is at Mapelane and says that the Shad were wild on Wed/Thurs  with him & girlfriend getting more than 20 each morning and evening  on small Rappies and Ondes (took two for livebait).Aparently even Jim Fish were taking   undersized and asked him not to throw his back but to give them to him ??!!"

I'll be at Mapelane 5th and 6th and then Cape Vidal 7th - 9th July.

@Jake1

I'll see you there, any identifying clothing that you wear?

I normally wear a black cap and blue drimac, saltist and torium reel. Does the sardines make big fish and sharks to go away from mapelane this time of year?

hope to see you there James

That can be a tough question, regarding the vacume that the sards can create.

I'll tell you what I know is happening in the area at the moment. The shad are there in good numbers, the Garrick are also starting to come out at the moment and I heard of a Big Honey Comb hooked at St Lucia a few days ago. I think that some good size fish will be around, I'll be brining my kite with so we can always take our baits out to 300m if the fish are not close. I'll also be bringing my swim bait rig, I feel like getting a good KLAP. LOL.

Another option would be to charter a boat, I was looking at doing that anyway to get some nice fresh bait (Bonnies and Snoek heads) and some nice Snoek for the briaa. I would need 5 people, if you got sea legs and R650 I would have 4 so far.

What will you be wanting to target? Eds, Ineds or both?

I'll only be at Mapelane for 2 days, then moving on to Vidal for 3, but keep an eye out for me and I'll do the same with you.

Great!

I wanna go for ineds- shark definitely. Gonna take a swim rig as well. What day do you want to charter, we will possibly be 2 persons.

How long is the drive to St Lucia from mapelane? Does Mapelane supply bait?

Sorry for all the questions.....Cant wait!

My appologies guys,

I've already been and gone, did not charter as the Umfolozi was flowing wich would mean that I would need to drive out of Maphalane and to St Lucia, not a drive you would want to do just for a charter. (I was hoping the river would be crossable then it is only a walk to St Lucia side).

A quick update on what is happening in that area at the moment, plenty shad at Crayfish point, they are pretty much all legal size. Slid one out for a good 6 hours but nothing taking. Plenty rock fish, a good size  catface rock cod came out and a good size tassle fish speared.
