As you probably saw in the report on Mapelane, I took my 2 young sons with me... we stayed in the Chalets there, which were quite reasonable... even have DSTV sport, which for kids is a MAJOR win! They advised us to leave nothing outside at nights, so we took all our belongings into the cabin at nights, including rods - bit of a shlep, but thats SA.

We fished every night, sometimes til late - absolutely no problem. I think the rumours are totally unfounded. Every resort in the country is plagued by petty theft no doubt, but at nights there are 2 Security dudes who patrol the premises with shotguns...

Hope this helps

Oh yeah the Beach permit...

At the main gate to Mapelane, not the reception, they sell Beach Permits - These permits cost you a deposit of R150, which you get back when you bring the sign back, and R250 for the beach access. The permit then allows you access to the beach 3hours before low tide until 3 hours after low tide. No-one is allowed on the beach outside these times. You are also not allowed to stop anywhere along the beach. The only places you are allowed to stop are down by Railway point between 2 signposts. From between these 2 signs you are allowed to fish.

So, it's R400, of which you get back R150, per 6 hours on the beach, PER DAY!

Oh sorry forgot to tell you... Permit is only valid sunup to sundown.

Problem..... bureaucracy says ken onli tek pearmit on saim dai. Gate office opens at 6am in the morning, they won't sell you a permit the day before.

HI Raggieman

I have been fishing Mapelane a lot and had no prob regarding safety so far.

Volcom and i went not to long ago and we fished the whole night

I fished at night alone once and had no prob but it still makes hair on the back of my neck stand up. I think its better to fish in a group when fishing at night.

Sorry i cant be of more help.
