Man what about a surprise. The lever drag we test

Man what about a surprise. The lever drag we tested would compete with my Tn50 but will outcast the Tn50 any day of the week and has a massive drag, virtually 32lbs on strike setting, not even full drag

from the supplier

Penn International Torque Lever Drag Reels

Penn had a goal to build a reel that incorporates the benefits of a star drag reel with the functionality and fishability of a lever drag. Penn reached and exceeded that goal in designing a reel that delivers incredible free spool and casting ability while retaining all of the benefits of lever drag. The International Torque Lever Drag is like no other lever drag reel on the market and includes a new patent pending drag system which offers many advantages.

Full Metal Body – one-piece machined aluminum frame and side-plates for the ultimate in gear alignment.

Versa-Drag systems allows multiple drag configurations for various conditions.

HT-100 drag washers.

Push-To-Turn preset knob keeps the drag where it needs to be.

Ratcheted lever prevents ''drag creep'' caused by hours of trolling

Braid Ready to handle the strain that braided lines put on a reel.

From all reports the new star drag is going to be a force to contend with. All the pro's of years of reliability in Penn and very cost competitive for a serious reel.

Around R2700 for the star drags (25lbs drag) and R3500 for the lever drags (over 40lbs of full drag)

Interesting info.

My dad bought me a Penn 25 GLS lever drag multiplier in the States many years ago.

I have only ever used it for R&S and it casts like an absolute dream. Casts as well as any of my other multipliers.

Amazing drag and low gear ratio make it a great medium size reel for winching sharks.

Maybe multipliers are under-rated from the side?

hi bill

there was an article in a mag not too long ago about the same debate. apparently after tests....the leaver drag reels seemed to out do the star drags on the rock/surf scene. who knows....lever drags may take over soon.

#enigma....do you know the model no. of that big lever drag so i can do some homework on it?...line capacity?

I'll give Hennie a call to find out just what it was. Just had a jol casting with the reel and didn't take note of what the model number was.

More or less same capacity as Tn50 but bit heavier with the added mechanics. I'll see what I can get ASAP

HIya Craig,

Think we need to get stuck into a few Black Rays this winter off St Francis with this new Penn matched with some Awa Shima Big Game and Alpha SeaGrand 0.60.

I think it would be a good testing ground for a R&S application?

Interesting reels. What setup did you cast these on Craig? I take it the lever drag would be for sharks?

Is there a minimum sinker weight for the leverdrag to get it going like with example a trini 50?

I saw the new Penn Star in the shops for R4500!!!!! A bit steep me thinks! i liked the feel of the reel but at R4500 it is a bit to steep a price to pay for a reel whose main competition (and already proven)is a grand cheaper.

Got me the new Saltist LD40; casts like a dream with 7oz sinker; I also tried a lighter weight and got some overwinds; problem with Saltist is that the black on the casing scratch and chips gou gou; :?;

The reel was put thru its paces with a nice size:wfish mussel cracker(in the range of 5-6kg) I had no problems bringing that fishie over the reefs; the fishy came close enough to see the size and the hook came out:X; sad:( i lost the fish but ::Sfor my investment(SaltistLD40);

can always just strip and respray the casing of the reel should not be a problem; casing is aloy.

Have any of you by now actually casted with this saltiga lever drag reel?

am also intrested in buying it for shark fishing but still worried about the casting action...

Any advice or experience?
