Makaira 80 W

Good evening All.

The past 2 days have kept me very busy. This makaira 80W belonging to Gawie Bruwer locked up on a small yellow while fighting it. I had to go through each single item to find the possible reasons for this and after that serviced the reel as i found it rather dry in certain places.

All this was very time consuming.

It has nice gears, a solid main shaft and large bearings. How does it compare to a Tiagra though? Any tuna reel will always get compared to the king of the hill in terms of build, durability, robustness and simplicity.

For you who do not know what a makaira looks like on the inside have a peek here and form your own opinion on them.

this is a intense reel to work on if you not familiar with more complex lever drags rather do not open this reel

Reels are a very personal issue.

I would buy a Tiagra always first, for very good reason, you will not easily beat it.

If money is the decider then the tyrnos excellent also, a cheaper version of the tiagra type breed.

Then penn international, Alutecnos, Avets, Maxell.

You need to read between the lines.

in summary:

so in evaluating these reels, it's pretty much a given that they will initially perform as advertised. i have no problem with that. the issue is longevity. a reel that delivers on all of the aforementioned points will receive an A+. the grade will decrease for each feature that is found missing or lacking, from A+ to A to A- to B+ to B to B-. you see the pattern. so here goes......

accurate - the accurate ATD 50 ....... final grade is a B+.

avet - ........ final grade is a B.

okuma - you just saw the makira 50 two speed........ final grade is an A-.

penn - the v series international...... final grade is a B.

shimano - Tiagra......... final grade is a B+.

the other reels, daiwa, alutecnos, everol, and finnor, i do not have enough experience with, but i doubt that we would find an "A" or an "A+" in this group.

i believe that okuma would benefit if they would pay more attention to their bearings. if they do, i would be happy to finally give out an "A+!!!" alan
