Lures vs Bait

I have often fished with spoons, plugs, rapalas and have not had amazing success but I have returned to the same spots and fished with various different baits and only got a few nibbles.

My question is: are there times when fish will ignore your well presented chokka bait for example and rather hit the lures?

I am currently under the impression that if I am not getting bites on well presented baits that it is not even worth casting a lure?  Surely if the species are not interested in fresh bait the chances of them striking a lure will be even slimmer?

Lures properly fished on the RIGHT spots will outfish baits 90% of the time.If you are fishing in the surf and and the water has no colour,no self respecting kob will eat any bait, but pull a spoon or rapalla past its nose and youll be on in no time.
Lure fishing is art on its own, once you master it you wont look back. Its a hell of allot of trial and error, you can take the short cut and latch onto someone that knows what they are doing.

Carlos,

Yea, I just wished I could have spend a couple of sessions with you before I got kicked out of Angols... hehehe

At this stage I do not have any bait rigs any more. All my saltwater gear is build around lure fishing.

Thanks Carlos but please specify what you been by 'RIGHT spots' I have tried lure fishing around rocky structures and lost many lures and haven't really tried lure fishing in the surf but i will in the near future.  I have heard that a white spoon at night is deadly effective for kob with a parallel gully structure.

What is the correct retrieving speed when targeting kob? and does it change for other species such as garrick.  I have been hesitant to retrieve lures too slowly as the lures swim too deep along the rocky seabed structures that i have been fishing which results in the loss of many lures.

Should one just avoid these areas? or is it just part of lure angling?

I've had the same the last three thursdays (when I go on the rocks after work) that there was no interest in my bait - maybe just a few nibbles and small rockod. But as soon as the sun sets and you throw out the poppers the big fish (barracuda and snapper in our world) come to play and are very eager to charge at anything. So I wouldnt loose too much heart if they not eating my bait, just change to a different setup and try some more.
