Lures for Yellows...

Good day,

I'm following the Artlure section for some time now and is fascinated by it. All of my fishing is done on fly and I've been fly fishing for over 12 years, mostly targeting Yellows and Barbel on the Vaal River. My goal for the new summer season is to see if I can master artlure fishing for Yellows. After reading numerous posts on Sealine regarding lure selections I decided to buy some Salmo Hornets to start off with. I now have numerous Hornets in size 2 to 4 and would like the get some feedback for the members on my collection below and what techniques to apply when targeting Yellows on the Vaal River.

Your advice will be much appreciated.

Hi there,

i am no expert so this is merely my opinion as seen on the stretch of the river I fish usually. I have as yet not caught any yellows on the hornet, maybe if the weather would be more stable things would be more fruitfull. The yellows we caught in the vaal were mostly caught near structure, trees in the water, rocky outcrops and the water just behind ilands. Just cast the lure past and retrieve the lure past the structure. I've found a slowish retrieve best. We've had success on small rapala jointed shadraps and spinners. The Mepps no2. Hope this helps a bit.

I have done well on Salmo Hornets. No 2, 3 and 4. I don't like two sets of trebles on the lure because the front sets of trebles often hook the yellow in the eye. The second set of trebles also often rather hook you when you try to unhook the fish without hurting the fish.
Hot Perch is my favourate, but i have done well with other colours also.
It is very important to use a slow retrieve.

I do agree with you and I'll be one of the first to voice my anger... I intend to replace the treble hooks with single barbless hooks, just need to get the hooks size right to make sure the lure action is not effected.

The lures we use for yellowfish is very small and have very small trebles which do no more harm than a barbless hook- so dont get "seriously angry" you will get serious heart problems for nothing.

The salmo Hornet 4f hot perch is deadly. Weve caught smallscale yellow, large scale yellow, Kurper and Barbel on it. For some reason the 4cm works better for us than the 2cm, cant say why.
