I once almost lost a spear and ALMOST drowned while recovering it. Shot into kelp roots, at 10m.... and knife on shore. One of the dives down to break it loose, my foot got snared in the spear link to gun, luckly there was a quick release, but that feeling, never want to have it again!!

How did you lose the spear?

wingman001 Firstly I have to say its not nice to loose a spear . Hope some one find it soon .

braailegend I know the feeling you refer to, but must ask why do you ever dive without your knife ???

Forgot it and to lazy to walk back... never again, it was at the start of my spearfishing trips, was still thinking of it as crayfish diving. I always have a knife with me now... and not that blunt big diving knives, but a smaller thin razor sharp one. The importance of a knife is under rated. Cuts rooiaas like a dream, spikey enough for a death stab, and thin enough to fit in pouch which wont hook.

For intrest sake, where would be the best place to carry knife, I keep mine on inside of my leg.

Shot at an angle, think was a little buoyant and missed the fish and into a what seemed to be a rock but was some kind of shell, it was like the ocean floor was full of giant clams, opening and closing. Frustrating current cut me off and could not find it again. Sure some one might see it down their.

I have always kept mine on outside of lower left leg ,as I am left handed . Was always the most comfortable place for me .

Hey Braailegend,
Inside of my leg is the place for me as well. I used to dive with it on the outside of my leg until it got snagged on some kelp while ascending from a lengthy time on the bottom. Good thing I try to dive within my limits. I ended up finning really hard and the sheath broke...

Learned a few important lessons that day...

Cheers,
L

Its amazing how you learn your lessons while spearfishing, nothing you read can prep you as a near death experience

It had a chord, was about to pull it out but the barb end piece was stuck when a wave bloke and pushed me back cousing the cord to be cut by a rock. Got a bit of a fright, and felt supper bad about loosing a friends spear!

It is a bivalve that lives on extracting Fe from its suroundings.

It will digest the spear and grow event bigger.

The greater terestrial speartrapper.

Hi ZIp,

Unfortunatly you cannot Spear in the Lagoon, and whenever we do free dive in the lagoon Parks board is very quick to come and give us Hassles.

We have dived at the trainbridge before to have a look for a lost fishing rod and had half of parks board members on our case within a few minutes of entring the water...

If you do want to dive the lagoon, i would suggest diving featherbed. With the current that comes through the heads, it is generally the cleaner spot and gets to a depth of about 12 - 15m, if the conditions are right you can see leerie, cracker and white steenbras, altough you not allowed to shoot them, still nice to see them.

If he is a good friend, a spear wont cost the friendship, hehe

Sounds like some hectic diving in the waves and wash, my favrourite areas in the sea to ambush fish, only a second or two to scope the fish, but very nice Gallies and cracker in the white wash.

thankfully a spear isn't too expensive but this is one of the reasons I'm a firm believer in reelguns... because you can just swim to the surface and relax and then get your spear once you have regulated your breathing...
