Hi guys! Hope all is well! Thought I would let you know how the fishing went over the Easter weekend.
Me and some of my friends travelled to Loskop Dam as we usually do for the Easter weekend. The weather was not promising and rain affected a large amount of our stay. We camped close to the water and were ready for some fishing, we had plenty of Barbel bait and plenty of Carp bait, now we just needed to catch! We fished for Barbel for 2 whole nights with Platties in a couple of different spots and did not get one pull! We tried and tried but nothing happened... We were a bit bleak about the situation and when the weather cleared up, finally, on Sunday we went to throw some carp lines in off the boathouse area from the bank. This is where the mayhem started and it was total carnage from about 15h00 - 03h00. There were 6 of us fishing during this time including a few people who had only caught 1 or 2 small fish in their angling lives... We mixed up the hempseed and got our honey and banana dips out and casted! We were using double hook traces with between size 5 and size 1 hooks with mealies and brown bread as bait. We sat for about 10 minutes until the first line went away with a small largescale yellowfish. From this moment on the fish never stopped biting and all of us managed to get at least 1 Largescale Yellow each, 1 Common Carp and 1 Mirror Carp... It was great fun even though the fish were not too big. In this time we managed to get nearly 70 fish. I unfortunately lost a monster Carp due to knot failure which I thought was in the 5-6kg range, it was a dissapointment to say the least.
All in all throughout the trip we managed to get the following species between us:
Redbreast Tilapia (Small)
Largescale Yellowfish (Biggest 300 grams)
Mirror Carp (Biggest 600 grams)
Common Carp (Biggest 780 grams)
Pictures to follow!
