Hi,
Friday I went through to Loskop to try and do some homework for the following day and catch some fish species as we were having a club comp the following day.
Deon Britz came through to join me in the hopes of finding some exciting barbel action but sadly friday was not to be. And I was fishing with my regular boat club Partner Sampie Britz so Deon was to join another club member for a mornings fishing the following day.
So comp day cam and a quick captains meeting at 06h00 and there was a massive race to get upto the trees in the river where it was hoped to get barbel and if you got there too late well it was a sign that you would blank. Sampie and myself hit a tree that had produced well for us in the past - well needless to say NIKS NADA Zilch came off that tree. So from here we went up to the cable to pull some Makriel and another boat pulled up next to us - they put 2 in the boat quick stix and we sat there another hour to no avail. So we decided that we needed to go in search of other species. We had driven about 5 kms when I saw a tree up on the bank in shallow water and said to Sampie I want to stop and just try there quickly - 2 nd cast I went tight on a fish I said to Sampie that I think I had found my Makriel as it came to the boat easily - When it got to the boat it suddenly woke up and to my suprise turned out to be a good sized barbel and we were off the mark. We moved to another laydown chuck the silicone blobs - I went tight again on what I belive was an even bigger barbel - this fight was short lived as the 35lb braid parted with relative ease.
Under this same tree we were able to pull some good sized Red breasted kurper on Spinners and it was already 9 am we were pulling off the water between 10 and 11 for brunch and normally by this time most of the guys have 6 species on the boat. SO I said to Sampie we needed to get a quick bass - out came the jerk baits and within 10 mins we both had size bass. We went to another spot for bass I put in a brushog and dropped a good bass and then it was off to brunch.
After lunch we headed in search of carp but the wind had come up and we were out of luck - so we headed to a bay and joined up with Marno - we were fishing for smalls (Vlei, Glassie, Dwarf, reds and Blue). Size 28 hooks with a small piece of Pink Powerbait about the size of a matchhead - anyways it did not take long for the big blues to find us and we got some serious hidings from Big blues as they pulled our ultra light tackle apart - biggest one of the day was caught by Rodney lewis at a little over 1.6kgs. Here is a photo of Sampie's specimen caught on a 28 hook
We managed to catch Dwarf, Vlei, Glassies and I managed a Dwarf tiger - sadly Sampie was not so fortunate - but we could not fing a Ghielie - I managed to find out where we could find one and we made a long burn up the river and within 10 mins had our two fish -we spent the rest of the PM in search of Barbel, DT and Makriel but no joy.
So I managed to Finish the day on 9 species and Sampie on 7.
Sampie Placed 6th and I took 1st - fishing was tough and I had to keep saying to myself the whole day to stay positive and that we were still in the game -looks like it paid off in the long run.
