Looking to buy a bakkie... mainly for fishing :fishnand use over weekends.

Looking for something between say R50k and 75k.

There are nice looking Isuzu Frontiers but i've heard they give issues.

Then also.. Petrol or Diesel... the Pro's and Cons?
Maintenace wise and drive wise?

Give the toughts on what you'd get and why?
Or what you have and your experience... ^^..

Thanks Okes

ADI - duck, when we get started, it's gonna fly.

For R50k, I'd suggest you shop around for the cheapest basket of spares and replacement parts, and then buy a bakkie to suit.

Personally : COLT RULES

My dream bakkie:

3.0 D4D or 4.0 V6 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4x4. A bit over the R75k budget!

One day.

If it is just for fishing, I'd say an Isuzu KB250 (Diesel) or the old model Hilux, which you'll be able to get in 4x4 for that price. None of them are really fast, good looking or fuel effiecient, but reliable as hell and cheap.

Buying a second hand colt is only problems and parts are damn expensive

Since Colt has a VERY LOW trade inn value you should get one cheaper than say Isuzu or Toyota.

Just do a leakage test on a Colt 2.8 if thats what you are buying cause they have had issues with heads cracking......sorry Homie, its sad but true.

The Ford Ranger 2500tdi can also be had for around the 70-80k mark. Those engines are rock solid as well.

When our company started over here we got 1 Toyota Hilux 2.4 and 1 mitshubishi. Three years on and my crew's colt has nothing but problems where as my hilux is in perfect working order. mind you...the crews rotate on a 3 monthly basis and dont give a damn about the car whilst I tenderly look after my own. But in the end I feel there is much more to go wrong with the colt where the hilux is a very basic machine and easy to maintain.

What kind of issues would that be?? My wive drives the Frontier 280DT 4x4 and we have got no hassles / issues so far. And it's got 270k on the clock.

My 1995 DC 4x4 280DT has got 354k on the clock also without any issues

Yeah I wouldnt touch the 2800tdi Colt. There was a very well known problem with the cylinder head, same engine as the Pajero.

Reason i posted this is i know little about issues some bakkies might give so apologies if i offended your choice. Just somethin i heard... nothing specific...just issues.

Anyways. I was looking at the frontier and there was a few advertised on Gumtree for a good price.

Since you have these could you tell me what services cost and so on... maintence wise and how are they on fuel

Much appreciated.

Hi Adi

Petrol vs Diesel is a contentious issue. I personally think petrol better.

Just my opinion. In that price range the isuzu and colt diesels are known for cracking heads. I have KB 260 petrol with over 300K on the clock. no issues at all. Conventional petrol bakkie. Take to any mach and he will sort you.

What Isuzu model is prone to cracking heads? I have been with the biggest Isuzu dealership in SA for 11 years now and we service these thing every day and I dont know of this particular issue with any model.

Which model engine are you refering to?

DD you have said enough, rather go buy the SL30 now:fbash

my colt 2.8 230 000km on the clock not a day's problems, follow Homie's advice and make sure that it has not been abused then you have a bakkie for life.

Problem is ppl think they can drive a diesel like you drive a petrol..............and you can't.

ps, apart from the fuel consumption petrol does tend to be a good option when buying oldish, I agree with BigT on that one

The isuzu is the cheapest to service and maintain. Example Isuzu diesel + Oil filter under R100. For a colt it's R150each. This was a few years ago nore than 2. I don't have my recent service prices with me now.

I love my COLT

If you are buying old, buy petrol:
1/ Service intervals = 15000km, not 5000 or 10000km's.
2/ Fuel consuption = +- 7.5 to 8km / liter petrol, vs 8.5 to 10km/liter in diesel.
The saving in fule falls long short of the cost of the regular service intervals.
3/ Everybody can fix a Ford V6 motor, even if it is dusguised under a different badge.

If you drive a lot.

I still love my COLT.
