Price, security, no Bill Gates. The version I have loaded (Ubuntu) installed in 15 minutes. Everything works first time. The only real hasle is no java and it doesn't support my tv card.
Going back to security, linux is pretty much virus and spyware free, that means LESS stress.

Linux is a unix based open source operating system. Most often Linux can be had for free. It is still a very techie operating system but it is getting more user friendly by the day. Yes it most certainly is the biggest competition to microsoft although apple possibly has more users.

If you are going to Linux on your personal PC for those reasons, you might as well stick with Windows. What Windoze give you in flaws, Linux give you in difficulty to administrate and driver incompatibility.

So far i'm having a ball with Linux, it boots faster than windows by a mile. The basic installation was PAINLESS. It took all of fifteen minutes from powering up the pc for the first time to surfing the net and listening to cd's. The same process with windows takes at least an hour and a half. For a windows install i need a wallet full of application and driver cd's. Linux (Ubuntu at least) gives me a productive and working pc with just ONE FREE cd.
Windows in all it's microsoft glory does not see ALL of my HD without SP2. Linux does.
Yes I supose a big part of the whole linux thing is that windows makes me feel like I've lost touch with my computer. I grew up with DOS. At the moment I feel that Linux is the right route to follow.

Not the PC WINDOWS.
Windows, a great product from microsoft, the only thing is microsoft have labeled it incorrectly. micrsoft calls it an operating system
when all it really is, is a good program for wasting and abusing resources.

been using ubuntu on my toshiba for more than 6 months. best IT decision i have ever done for myself! like land locked said secure, easy to use cheap and comes with everything u need to get started, except for java! try this site for java install:

i use virtual box and run windows within linux.

i would recomend VMware but the current version is not compatible with ubuntu 7.04 or at least that was the last time i checked.
once u have virtual box setup on linux create a virtual machine and install windows. your wife will not know the difference. unless she is playing some high end games. u can create other virtual machines and run any OS on them.
