It depends a bit on what you will be targeting. For sharks and rays you have to use braid, because it offers very thin diameter with high strengh to fit more line on. So take a standard torium 30, with straight nylon you can get about 300 - 350m of 0.55mm. With the introduction of braid you can get 600m of braid and 200m of nylon ontop giving you 800m of line.

The leader has a couple of purposes. 1. Serves as a shock absorber when casting heavier sinkers. It allows you to really punch a sinker out without breaking off every second cast. 2. Because of the thicker diameter it gives you extra protection against the bricks and structures on the ocean floor while fighting your prize fish.

Lets put it this way.

I filled up my Grandwave 50 with 350m of .55 mono the other day..... and Dougie from Gremlins that did it for me, said that I could still get 300m of braid on as a backing.

Naa, too expensive, 350m should be enough.

The very same night, I was almost stripped by what could have been a big skate or a sandshark, I probably had 20m of line left on my spool when he finally turned.

All I could think about was "jeepers, I wish that I had the braid backing, jeepers, I wish that I had the braid backing, jeepers, I wish that I had the braid backing"

I eventually lost the fish when my leader popped.

I can promise you this that even the thought of spending R100 on a case of beers seems ludicrous, until I have saved for 300m braid backing.

When we are fishing for big fish, we need all the help we can get and just think about how much an extra 300m of line will help.

I also now use a nylon coated steel leader attached to my nylon leader, so that I can prevent being burnt off at the ring, and it will of course give me massive protection against the bricks.

Also you save money... here's why....

I have 2 shimano speedmasters. Both have 300m braid on. Now i buy i spool of line, and i can fill a reel twice give or take a few yards.

In the end you save because with no braid a reel usually takes about 400m of line and you sit with spools full of 200-150m of line all over the place.

hi marthin

i never used braid b4 and this sounds like a good idea, one question tho. if u using braid joined to your main line , lets say 0.5 what diametre braid do u use? also when joining your main line to your leader would this not have a negative effect lets say in strength  cause u joinng braid to main to leader?

Elf 786, if your knots are good then you have a very strong connection between the three. Braid diameter is usually between 0.20mm and 0.26mm if I'm not mistaken. I use the Kingfisher Pro Braid 45lbs, 0.26mm.

From braid to mainline - Bimini Twist on both and joined by a cats paw.

From mainline to leader - depends on what type of leader. Edible leader for me I join it as follows: Bimini in mainline, double fig 8 to join the doubled mainline and leader. In-Eds, I use a wind-on leader, Bimini in mainline joined to leader with a modified cats paw.

All thanks to Reefmans tutorials!

Mangiangalli , Berkley Whiplash 50lb is 0.17mm. A bit more expensive ,but, worth it for an extra 100/200 metres.
