I went down on Sunday night armed with nothing more than my 9' Berkley Air, my mini tackle bag and a cooler box with some Pillies & a few mullet. The mullet were in case the Shad didn't pitch up. Saturday night had produce a lucky 40cm FL Garrick and 1 Shad on spoon which was hardly enough to keep me interested.
Back to Sunday night. I once again only managed to entice one shad on spoon so after about 40 min I decided to change to a mullet throw bait. Onto the 10lb Fireline I tied 3,5mtr of 80lb braided leader and a 1mtr trace made of 1mm nylon & 90lb Steel. I put on a mullet head clipped it to the 2oz and put it out to about 60mtr.
While waiting I noticed a spotted gulley swimming against the edge and then again a bit further out. It was in the reef and hooking it there would be short and one sided fight. I flapped a mullet and put it about 30mtr out just behind the reef.
A few minutes later a got slack line as a wave washed in I took up lots of slack as quickly as I could and then felt the tension of a fish on
It was now exactly where my 1,2mm leader was cut off by a bus Raggie a while back. I just kept a bit of pressure and then when it turned let it go. i knew the further out it was the better. After a good battle I finally leadered a nice little Spotted Gully of 132cm. It's not big but on Dropshot tackle with 10lb Fireline it sure was fun.
It's quite impressive that a combo that comfortably handled that Spotted gulley and could handle a LOT more is also delicate enough to catch shad and baby Garrick on a 1,5oz spoon.
