Light tackle lure fishing from a boat in the Red Sea

Hi all,

In 3 weeks I am going on a liveaboard scuba diving trip in the Egyptian Red Sea.

I'd like to do some lure fishing in between dives - we'll be in and around reefs and wrecks between 10-50m depth.

I have a Shimano Sienna 4000 reel I'd like to take, but I need to get a telescopic rod that will fit in my bag.

I don't want to spend a lot of money getting set up.

The fish I hope to catch will be bonito, barracuda, kingfish, rock cods, snapper etc.

Please recommend a rod and line as well as some lures to try.

I have some McCarthy minnows and paddle-tails, as well as some bucktail jigs.

The reel currently has 5kg mono, but I suspect this will be too light, so I was thinking to get a similar diameter braid - probably 20kg breaking strain I guess. That should get me about 150m on the spool.

Shimano Beastmaster Tiger Special 3 piece rod. It's a 7 foot rod so being a 3 piece should fit in your bag.

Depends on where you will be going. The light outfit should be OK for the northern areas.

I haven't dived Brothers but have dived and fished St Johns several times going back 15 years. The fishing has definately got worse due to lack of policing but there are still some serious fish around. Unfortunately you will be seriously undergunned. I wouldn't go with anything less than Penn 6000 / Shimano 8000 size and 300m of 30lb braid - and that would be light. Sure you will get barracuda and small stuff on the light stick, but one decent fish will leave you broken in seconds.
There are big cuda (20kg+) GT's (50kg), and sails around.
