Light Spinning

Hi Guys,

I'm in the market for a light spinning setup for lagoon fishing.
Will be used mostly with lead heads from 1/2oz to 3/4oz for grunter, cob and steenies.
Rod length of 6ft - 7ft 2pc
Spinning Reel size 2500 - 3000.
Braid 10ib - 15ib.

Any suggestions on a nice light spinning setup will be appreciated.
I don't have a budget, but would like a mid level setup.

Regards

I've got a Assassin 7,0 MH paired up with a Stardic 3000 and 15lb gosen. Very nice combo. Use it for bassing, Rockies in our rivers and spinning offshore for jub jubs. Lots of fun.

That sounds like a nice combo.
The only thing that bothers me about that stradic is that you pay R2000 + for that reel and it doesn't have a carbon drag.
I know you can put carbon washer in, but if I'm gonna pay over R2k for a reel carbon washers should be standard.

I'm interested in the Finnor Lethal. It seems like the smallest one I can find is the ltc40. Looks like a little beast or a reel. Anyone can give some feedback on the Finnor Lethal?
I would like a smaller one. I'm scared that if I get a 4000 size reel, that it will be to big for the 6ft - 7ft rod. I have a 5000 spinning reel and as far as I know the difference between a 4000 and 5000 is the spool size.

The new stratic 3000 (Fk model) comes standard with carbon drag washers. For some reason the 4000 still comes with felt washers though.

I checked now. the Stradic 3000FK is R3000 incl vat at Basil Manning. Ouch. that's a lot for a small little grinder. lol

Hi corkscrew,

I have the Finnor Lethal 40.
I think the reel is a bit big for light spinning applications in estuaries. Especially paired with a 6- 7ft rod.
I also found the line lay on the reel to be a bit of an issue, thus I experienced wind knots. I managed to correct this using the washers provided in the box and spooling a slightly thicker braid, but it is still not ideal. With 15lb braid I think you might also have issues...
The reel has a really nice drag though. Love the feeling of it!

I am no reel expert though, this is just my opinion...

Corkscrew try phone around some of the smaller shops your side for the Stradic FJ. I managed to pick up another 3000 a month ago for my dad @ R1800 new at a store in Balito.

New ones are cool but are a bit steep.

You can also go with the lower rage diawa's or shimano's. I have a Solstance, which has caught many grunter and leeries in estuaries. It isn't the best quality real, but does the job and has proven to be very 'lucky'.

If you want to go up a level to the mid-range reels then Stratics are the best option (just my opinion). The FJ has been discontinued, which means you could get your hands on a 2500 for 1500-2000, but you would still have to fit corbon drag washers. It's smooth, has great line lay and is just a pleasure to fish with.

Ultimately you need to weigh up whether its worth spending the extra money or if dealing with the odd wind knot and a slightly clunky drag is worth saving some cash.

The latest Stella in the 3000 comes with felt washers so it's not the end of the world. Easy to replace with carbon when they wear out. I would shop around for a Shimano Symetre 3000 size, fill it with Berkley Fireline 8kg. You can also upgrade the drag washers to Carbon off E-Bay. Rod wise I think the latest Shimano Crucial are too expensive for what you get. Try shop around and get the older all black model for R1,000. Total setup should set you back under R3,000 for a top "mid range" setup. If you can't find Fireline I would recommend Suffix 832 in 10 or 15 pound. Enjoy and let us know what you settle on. _seal1_

I bought an Elbe Blue Crystal rod and a Shimano Sienna 2500 to target grunter in estuaries on lures, loaded 10lb Gatorbraid on the reel. 5 years later I've caught countless fish with that set-up and it's still in perfect nick.

I got my PB grunter of over 6kg on it, along with lots of smaller steenies, shad, the odd kobbie and lots of bull mullet. I think I paid about R1,500 for the entire set-up and I don't think there's any need to spend more than that for this kind of application.
