Light Dropshot Combo, Opininos please

What are your thoughts,

I will be using this for Targeting Leery, Skipjack and Kob in Rivers.

The reel is a choice between the Sahara and Sedona, the Sedona is about R450 +-R100 cheaper than the Sahara and has one more bearing but has a graphite frame instead of Sahara's Aluminium frame. On such a light outfit I doubt I need a Aluminium frame that will just corrode.

The 6'6" medium light Passion Stik is probably the best value for money and is highly rated by the Alcocks (before they started promoting sponsors products) and at only R320 my minds pretty much made up here.

The Triple Fish Gator Braid is very thin 0,08mm for 15lb, I actually wanted 10lb but I didn't want to go thinner than 0,10mm. The alternative is the Suffix Fuse 0,12mm which is 10lb I think. Gator Braid is about R250 for 300mtr & Suffix Fuse is a few Rand more for only 250mtr.

I have mentioned prices because this is the budget I want to stick to.

I know Fireline is good but it's pricy and then you have a weak point where the Fireline and backing are joined so I'll rather go with one line

Sounds like a good combo, similarly priced rod is the shimano scimitar. Nice a light with enough backbone. With regard to the braid, I pefer a slightly thicker casting braid as I find it easier to tie good knot with.

So I'd go with the .12 or even a .15 braid. The sedona is very nice, I have 1 2500 sedona and a 4000 sahara. For the set up your looking at I'd go with the sedona and put the extra 100 bucks toward braid. My 2c...

Thanks, I'm leaning towards the Suffix Fuse. I got my figures wrong the Suffix is quite a bit cheaper than the Gator Braid and it's designed for casting. In fact it appears to be identical to Fireline at almost 1/3 of the price and Suffix is good quality so I doubt it's just a cheap "rip off" of Fireline. Also considering the 10lb is 0.12mm that's what I had in mind. That 0,08mm looks real thin to knot and removing a wind knot would be impossible in 0.08mm braid.

Thanks for the input, I think it will be the Sedona 2500, Passion Stik 6'6" ML and the 10lb Suffix Fuse. Now that I know what I want I just need to convince my wife of what a great birthday present it would make LOL.

Hey Fluke, what price is the Suffix Fuse and where are you getting it?

On the Sedona, just make sure that it has a bevelled lip on the spool which is what you want for casting braid.

The Sedona does have a bevelled lip.
In E.L. Bilimoria have 2 spools of the 250mtr 10lb Suffix fuse marked down to R179 (One of those is going to be mine soon) and Spargs have a few spools marked at R229.

Very nice combo, will fish very well - I can attest to the Passion Stick I have a 7 foot that stays with me wherever I go, I fish it with a 2000 Daiwa Regal and 12lb Saltiga Surf braid. Its the most succesful dropshot combo I have, something about the action. When I change braid will go for the suffix, or if I have spare bucks will look at the Nanofill from berkley, I just felt it yesterday and it is the smoothest braid I have seen, even smoother than the Saltiga, pricey though. The only reason I never bought a Shimano was because of the two spool issue with the sedona and sahara. Only one spool not good for me, as I use the spare spool for drift cracker with mono.

Thanks for the heads up Patrick, I have started checking out some comparisons between Fuse & Fireline but hadn't found much substantial when I ran out of time. I'll search a fiew reviews before I buy.
I've used 20lb Siderwire EZ cast?? It's strong but delaminates in the area that's at the tip eye when casting so I'm not keen to use that again.

Ja the braid shopping is a minefield! There are SO many varying opinions from anglers on each brand. Every time i think i've made my mind up then i read other reports and it changes again. I'm still looking for that thinnest 15-20lb braid that wont wind knot, is round, soft and strong. Oh and that isnt in lumo yellow, red or orange.

Pat - Jerry Brown 10lb or 20lb in white mate.... problem solved, you'll never look back or buy another braid...

Howzit mate, welcome back. I couldnt find any 10 or 20 Jerry on Ebay in 300 yards? Price is as always a factor too. Will see what i can find and take your advice.

The Jerry Brown has been at the back of my mind all along as I use it as backing on my shark reels. Wasn't sure how it would cast as I hadn't heard of many people(in SA) using it as a casting braid.

Will have to check out the 10lb.
