Short answer: star drag

Lever drags generally dont handle water and sand nearly has well as star drags. LD's are designed for boat use.

IMO the only reason you'd want a lever drag for R&S is if you're targetting big fish at deep water spots or when using a kite/bait boat etc.

There are LD reels on the market that would give the same durabilty and castablity as a starg drag 30/50 size reel but you will be looking at forking out seriaaas cash for them. . . just not worth it.

IMO the lever drag is amazing reels... But they don't like to swim. I think every reel has its place. If you swim a lot and fish the reefs a simple reel like a 15/30 or 20/40 is super! Lever drag will give you problems after a while.

The avet lever drags I use is great but they hate water... The bearings go quick if it swims and I learned this the hard way. But I will not just use any other reel than my avet again for catching big sharks. Once you experienced the reel the gogga bites. So I now own a large variety of both star drag and lever drags.

I saw avet does a lot of smaller size ld's I still want to get a few and test them as well. But both reels have its advantages and its disadvantages...

ld
drag pre set easily accessed
generally more expensive
stronger drag settings
bigger reels generally for boating
some are complex when servicing
not all manufacturers have perfected them for casting as yet

star drag
some are swim friendly
generally cheaper
easier serviced

manufactures have now started to gear ld's for surf angling by doing some mods
