Lets Talk Circle Hooks

There is two application were circles have failed me,

1. fishing driftbait for reef fish such as blacktail. I used the 1/0 mustad thin wire circles. Every fish i got swallowed the bait untill I changed over to a J and started striking them, I did it purely to experiment, but as the fish probably didn't realise it was hooked just keep swallowing the bait.

2. It also doesn't work from the Reefs because the fish often pick the bait up and swims towards you, snagging one in the process, here striking earlier with J hooks is much more productive.

@ adam the reason ure hooking the eds in the bottom jaw is when they pic up the bait the weight of ur sinker pulls the hook down into the bottom jaw and then u set the hook .
I haven't had a problem with the z steels yet ,I think if ur hook doesent set properly that's when u have problems ,all my hookups have been in the scissors exept one in the tongue

Its so obvious!!! Why didn't I think of it? Thanx man.

Interesting topic guys! Never used circles myself but would like to know what "part" does your sinker play in hook ups with circles??

What i mean is fixed trace or sliding trace? And grapnel or not??

Surely they play a big role in how the hook sets or am i being silly?

Ek is eerlik.

Can someone also please post some pics of a baited circle hook for edibles^^... Still eagerly awaiting the response on the type of trace to be used for circles when fishing on the reefs as well. Limited sliding or terminal rig???

i'm one of the guys that out fished Marthin on the boat with circles. the trick is not to strike and i think that is the hard part for most who have converted to circles especially those who fish rod in hand.

when fishing with the boys (and Daisy on the boat) they always shout "Lush your rod!" and i reply if the fish is on its on...let it take some line then tighten up a bit and Bob's your uncle. a perfect hook in the corner of the fishes mouth.

even of my kayak i can let the fish go crazy and i don't stress cause its not going anywhere. At the 5-species i had 2 fish on but i continued to finish my sms i was sending before reeling them both in.

we caught a bunch of Stumps - mostly size, but mostly released. fishing with 7ft rods and 4kg line and 2/0 and 4/0 circles.

anyway - my two biggest that i managed to land were 47cm and 37cm. the 47cm was a beast, wow, fast runs - but he was out of energy quickly - until the shallows of cause. they were lekker fun on the 7ft. hahaha - every1 looked at us funny when we rocked up with 7ft's and tiny grinders . . .standing next to 14ft's with saltists . . .but we landed the biggest fish :)
i also lost a few nice ones as well - they ran me straight to the rocks. also lost a lekker fish when FOOLS cast over me from 30m away . . .makes no sense!
