Yesterday my fishing buddie and I went fishing in a spot know for big mussel cracker, "aka" Brusher.

Armed with sealice, ghost crabs, red bait, octupus and sand prawn.

We arrived at our spot at 5.45am, the whole day we where catching rats and mouse, nothing of great value, 5kg and up!!!!

At about 1.30pm the tide had turned and the sea conditions was amazing. Anyway I get suck into reef but managed to get my trace back with a bent hook. I decide to bend it back into position with my teeth.

Lance tells me to replace the hook, I laugh and cast my new bait.

Down she goes, I can feel it is a BIG BOY....

Then suddenly my line goes slack, my heart begins to sink into deep depression, THE HOOK STRAIGHTEND!!!!

Had I changed the hook????????????

For Brusher fishing I only use Mustad "big gun". It becomes expensive when you 5 traces down every trip...

This is the first time this has happened and the last!!!!

Good call Aqua. But is your hook up rate the same? Size of hook would then go up to 10/0 if you use 8/0 j hooks? Or not? Think I would try something with a nice wide gape. 10/0 - 12/0 circle.

The circles will work the softer baits but if you put a red crab on the circle's point sticks into the shell (and yes, used big circles). I've see 1 or 2 crackers landed on red crab baits with circles but seen and experienced some misses, and I still think it's because the gap was to small.

My 2c

And hard luck Moyeni, but valuable lesson learnt. Don't take chances when you fishing for cracker.

Oh no Moyeni. Not a good thing. Well as you say lesson learnt.

Why not try those Katana hooks. Seems strong enough to hold a Sharky or two.

If I have fished a area before and know the reef structure and whether there is redbait or mussels on that reef 9/10 a brusher will target that reef to feed.

If I visit a new fishing ground I look for mussel beds. Deep water channels a longside the mussel beds and throw in between those channels.

What I also do is draw a picture in my head of the surrounding I am fishing in and say to myself if I was a brusher where is the best place to feed.

Also remember brusher move from one structure to the next. Last year I threw in between to rock structures and wala, bob's your uncle!!!

It can become expensive BUT that one pull changes everything!!!
