Leaders

Here is a tip I got from a magazine. Seady made leader on a spare spool saves a lot of time. Just make up a batch of leaders to your own preference and spool them end to end.

Hi there Naruto

What you can also do is role up one leader on the role and stick it with masking take and then the next and so on. The moment you need a leader you just peal the masking tape the leader comes of the spool. I do it this way because it is a bit faster for me.

Good post!!

Addition to the tip.

Reel the line off from the main spool to your leader spool (count how many turns to make your leader ie 6m = 22 turns)

Wrap up your 22 turns then simply tie the snap on with a polamar knot and add next 22 winds then next polomar.

No cutting looping etc, etc.

Attach the leader to your main line reel it on and cut the next leader just below the snap-on

Hannes, this is for pre-tied leaders with a swivel on the end so the cable tie of reefman won't work here.

Hi there Gents

Has any one got some impute on what is going on with the leader issue? I have tired a new “leader” this past weekend and it works quite well. I am quite sure that u gents know of it already.
I am not sure what the name of the knot is or how he tied it but it comes down to the point that your normal line is folded in 2 and a knot made from there. The only thing I have against this is that it takes a lot of time to make.

AMG1 - This whole system of new rules is only to be tabled at the SAFBAF AGM in June.

There is currently a massive objection as the financial implications of what they want to do are massive and the new zoning of water makes 90% of the dams in SA unsuitable for league / SA's angling.

We'll see if it is going to be pushed through.

The next thing is will they allow a double line. By all accounts you will have to fish a line straight through with no leader at all or no double line.

If this is the case then we'll have to go back to long rods with a soft action to be able to cast small weights and feedballs a long distance.

Next time you make a double line leader try the following:

Take the spool of the reel, put your line around a part of your stand and walk off 7m for a 12' rod (spool in one hand and line end in the other)

Take the double line and make a large loop in it, twist the loop once.

push the spool and tag and through the loop

Pull tight and roll back onto the spool.

I'll do a pictorial if the double lie is allowed. This weekend I fished a double leader on 0.18mm Specimen Hypersoft and measured my best cast with a 3oz baited rig at 185m and with a M1 rig at 127m

Thanks for the advice Enigma. I will defiantly try that this weekend. I have heard so many rumors about the planned changes in the new rules that it makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.
Is it also true about the landing and keep nets that need to be changes? If possible can we start a post on the planned changes so that we can know what is waiting for us?

I use either Ion Power Reflector which is darker and easy to see or in clear water I use the ISO Fluorine leader which is almost invisible.

For speed fishing or when I fish conditions that I want to see my leader I put a 1m long step of 0.25mm S-Mission bright yellow line to help follow the line but it is then 6-9m away from the trace

There are some dams when using a coloured leader is not recommended ie Klipdrift.

Other like many Vaal Dam venues don't need clear leaders so the yellow line is fine.

I'm involved in some working groups largely opposed to the more radical changes.

The fact is there are going to be  a few disruptive changes in conventional bank angling and as is always the case with change there will be uncertainty.

Please understand that the majority of the changes are aimed at fish and habitat conservation but some have been blown way out of proportion.

Yes landing nets and keep nets will have to be knotless and anglers have an unhooking mat.

Traces will only have single hooks and weigh-in's will take place 2 or 3 times in a competition.  Weighing in a hang mat with fish being released immediately.

Minimum weight for sinkers being 25gr

You have to land all fish hooked within the 10m fishing area allocated to you.  If your fish goes into the adjacent swim you will be warned and then on the 2nd time the fish will be disqualified.

There is a lot of speculation and the work groups still have a lot of answers to be provided and issues and contingencies to be planned..

I will be at the AGM and will get a copy of the new rules and there interpretations and post them as an attachment with a synopsis as soon as it is finalised and implemented.

Thanks for the update Enigma. I just wonder what the impact will be for some of the guys that don't always have the finances to buy a bunch of tackle at once, especially where the whole family is involved at club and league level. And what the impact will be on the clubs.

That is exactly my question. Myself my wife and both my kids fish Club, league and National level so the impact s high but luckily it can be implemented over time and 90% of the tackle you have now is useable for the with the changes

But to understand it from a management level. They want to move our competitive angling to where our long range feeder fishing (conventional bank angling) aligns itself with world standards in terms of

a. Conservation
b. Handling of tackle
c. Feeder skills.

This is because FIPSed the world governing body on Freshwater Angling is approving Feeder fishing as an international discipline.

So in 2011 the first World Champs in feeder fishing will be held and thus we will participate.

Look how well we have done over 6 years in Competitive Carp Angling. The same will be possible with feeder fishing.

The transition between SA Bank Angling to Feeder fishing is minimal then we will have teams with full Protea colours competing in WC with a genuine chance at a medal.

All said the process cannot just be autocratic. Remember this is National level and provinces can implement the changes over a year or more.

If a family is involved like mine one only need implement the change one set of tackle at a time as not all fish nationals or all fish leagues on the same day etc, etc.

But as I said we'll keep everyone posted and I will be representing my Province at the AGM so I'll have the information first hand to post on the Forum.
