LEAD OR NOT

I used old tire leads to cast some ball and piramid leads but it was powdery when still hot and i could break off the filling piece by hand when hot.
Seems ok when cold but will it be ?
What make it so powdery ?
Could it be zink ?

Probably over heated. Tyre weights are not pure lead and tend to be harder finished. Good for spoons and jigs as it doesnt bend so easily.

I agree. When you break a tyre weight you will see a crystal like surface on the break. It could be a tin or zink alloy - both will result in a more brittle lead alloy.

Nothing wrong with that as far as  making lures is concerned.

i have seen some of the weights take much longer to melt maybe them.
added 50% clean lead but not as hard anymore.

Hi,

Why the persistance that the lures must be "hard". How hard?

I'm told that it's nice to have teeth marks on your lures?

Otherwise use Tungsten

If you are making spoons

Tin is the answer! Not so much to be hard but because it shines better and stays shiny. Keep the lead for your sinkers.

10% antimony to 1kg soft lead, if you use wheel weights you stuff up the antimony best is old lead flashing from the houses . clean lead with wax first then add ant . dependiging on what you casting you can add tin 4% to get it to flow better . remember the harder the lead the harder its to pour and get a "perfect" finish .

Could it be that the tire leads are of an alloy to prevent them from distorting (bending) when subjected to high speed on a car's wheel? and therefor mess up the balance of the wheel? I guess Tackle Whore would know?
