LATEST CUSTOMS OFFICIALS SCAM on the MOZ side

Just returned from a fantastic holiday in Moz. The customs officials on the Moz side are on a mission to make some extra cash. At our destination in Moz there was a South African resident in Moz that informed us of the following scam, ja right we thought!

THE OFFICIALS MAKE AS IF THEY STAMP YOUR PASSPORT BUT THEY DON'T, when you want to exit the country you must pay a cash fine of R2000.00 per passport or you go to the local jail for illegal entry into Moz (apparently the jail is only 1 meter high and your family must provide you with food)

My wife and I rushed off to check our passports and were releived to see the stamp, There were however 2 people in the camp that found that their passports had not been stamped, the panic on their faces was major and their holiday mood had disappeared. We never saw them again. When we arrived at the border on Friday 11th Jan we found another couple arguing with the officials about their passports not being stamped, guess who had the upper hand, they eventually paid up. After our passports were stamped on both sides and we were about to get into our vehicle we heard a big commotion behind us on the Moz side, we quickly heard that they were 6 people in a 4 x 4, not one of their passports were stamped and the officials wanted R12000.00.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR PASSPORT FOR THE STAMP before you leave the border.

Sad to hear, however as a frequent traveller, I always make sure that my passport is stamped, thus no excuse....They should have used their vehicle papers, that should be stamped upon entry (TIP) as reference to highlight the scam. What they more than likely did was paying a runner 200mtz to get passports stamp as to avoid standing in the que, so my thinking is they got scammed by the "passport runner" Please do excuse my "directness" but it is what is at the end of the day.

100% most probably used the services of a runner that did not get passports stamped! Not sure why people use these guys as the procedure in getting through is pretty straight forward?

I do sometimes, but I make sure it's stamped + car docs are stamped, also I only pay 100mtz...I know it's not right but then again I don't want to wait.... Must be Ressano Garcia/Komati anyway.....anything is possible there. But a good pointer for visitors to double check, I always use Goba as I travel from Durban for work ect.... no fuzz, hassle...respect. However Ressano when we go to Nelspruit, my wife is a Mozzie so easy going all the way.

I alway wonder.........who thinks out all this nonsense.........with our tour to Angola the same happened.......or they leave some of your vehicles numbers on your papers out:fbash
