i was disgusted with last nights esa. the guys were fishing near a proctected reef ;aliwal reef and were catching yellowfin tuna.none of these beautiful fishes were released and none were badly injured .the one with the hook in the stomach would still survive if the line was simply cut.why was the water chummed and these guys still fish for tunas knowing that the sharks are around.i think that over a dozen tunas must have been killed in this way and by not releasing the tunas landed.i was also disgusted with mark when he decided not to release the bonito caught during the sardine run but decided to slide out the head .Is it possible the bonito was still alive when he cut the head.i have no problem with a guy slinding a live bait but either returning it back or taking it home if it is a big edible. These guys are now going against their policy of educate and conservate

I agree Killy. The guys who promote conservation of marine life are the ones not practicing what they preach. They shouldn't be fishing there in the first place. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I find the show a little boring and of late tend to find much more joy watching "heer gaan ons alweer" much more exciting.

I practise catch and release and I tag most of my fish, BUT if the sharks were beaching the way they were on esa last night. I would hapely drop any bait. dead, alive, half kicking, dosnt matter. That was fish fever at its best - No one would have given up the chance of not catching those sharks. If I didnt have bait, I would have probaly cut of my own foot for bait, but no one would have given that chance up. not for a bonito, not for a cuta and I'l get in trouble if I name more. any bait will do in a case like that. last nights show was exelent. atleast the LBSA. ESA rocked

Aaaarrrhhhh!!!!the lbsa was fantastic to watch and have never seen or heard of sharks feeding frenzy right in the shorebreak.they were literally beaching just as the killer whales do and these were some good size sharks man they were big.it was a real spectacle to watch. other than that the show can be quite boreing.

Releasing any Fish where it is hooked in the Gut - is releasing a fish with serious internal injuries and beleive me it wont survive.
using a Bonito for bait well I would keep my bonnies if I catch them as they are by far the best bait to use when targeting larg fish and I reguarly buy Bonnies too.
Killy I dont understand your statement regarding the Bonnie - you say you have no problem with ppl using live bait or taking the fish home but have a problem with Mark keeping that Bonnie and chopping its head off (Humane thing to do - rather than leave to suffocate) and using it as bait - by the looks of it Wesely was using the rest of it, so it was wasted and it was done inorder to give you a fishing show to watch and criticise.
Guys if you find ESA boring why do you watch it then no one is forcing you too
and if you feel you can do better - well start your own show - its easier to critcise from the arm chair.

the bonito was alive when he caught it and there was no serious injuries unlike the tuna in the gut.My point is why kill the fish and why couldnt he use it intact as a live bait and if there wasnt a pick up , then simply return the fish back into the water alive .If the fish was too big to use as a live bait,simply take it home or return it back to the water.With regards to the tuna my point is that none of the tunas hooked survived .The one that was hooked well in the corner of its mouth not not even returned to the water. To me this is double standards as it seems that these esa guys went out with the intention of either killing these fish of to take their catches home and against their ethos of educate and conservate as over a dozen tunas from near a protected shoal lost their lives. I would love to see a guy thinking of using his leg as bait when there was plenty of live/fresh sardines around to use as bait. A point of interest is that the idiots that used the bonito head and body did not get a pickup as compared to the guy that used fresh sardines. You must practice what you preach.
Fact is that none of us actually know the mortality rates of fish realeased with hooks in their gut. Guys have occasionally caught snoek with longline hooks (they just cut them loose)and they seemed none the worse. There is no ways that one should apply the logic that a gut hook is definitely terminal. One surely has to give the benefit of the doubt to the fish and its ability to survive??

a. Be attached to a line with hooks through your back to watch as the sharks come after you? or
b. Suffer a quick and painless fate?

Having watched the second part of the show now - three fish landed - one dead one gut hooked and one that was alive that they didnt show if it was released or not but the fact that they used a lip gripper I would assume they did. two tunas hooked and lost to the taxman - didnt see a dozen ??? and using a chumline is used by all Tuna fisherman to get the tuna to rise and take bait.

Hey there guys yes the show can be boring but informative at times i think our team has progressed from strength to strength esp with their presentation skills. The god father is a natural though he joined later he has a way with the camera .Carolien i must say is just a pretty face , theres nothing natural about her presentation really and just spoils the show for me.
That smash was great to see and yes its even better to fish it ,not uncommon this part of year ,theres no time to loose , but if theres so much of sards spilling out why kill the bonny , flicking a coulpe of sards would have done the trick aswell , shame on you Mark.Its great fun but nothing better than casting a bait into the ocean and waiting for the bite .Sight fishing is for trout and Bass anglers guys.No difference between that and going to Ushaka and throwing a bait into the MAIN TANK!!!
