Here is a pic of a kob taken this week off Luanda on one of our homemade jigs, an Inchiku "Slow Jig".....
One hour jigging...Hooked 4, lost 3, then got blown out....this was the smallest of the bunch...
You could say the fishing is pretty good!
Try getting in touch with Carlos Moran on here, he is based up that way and runs a great charter operation.

March only second best to April, when Mrs. suchnsuch, President of OGFA caught her first 150 lbs Tarp. Spoken to Doc Iain (IGFA rep, permanetly in Ang) who didnt much like the nets being placed by fihsremen from the local community there... old problem. Plenty of the big spawners being caugh before reproducing... might put the Tarpon ambitions - breaking the WR of 300 lbs - back for some time to come. Doc fished there X-mas n nothing much came off it. Consider he n his brother Cam caught some fish 200 lbs plus there over the years, his current verdict is as close as you get to reality. Anyhow, you're just a nip away from the fabulous Marlin, Sails, YFinTuna and Dorados and all are "on" this time of the year. Welcome to Angola MAN!

Got the Jigging rods arriving hopefully this week, and should be able to supply you prices etc towards the end of the week....

Kwanza in certanly excelent fishing place, look at the amount of world records done there and you can not be wrong.
I think this report will give you a general idea of fishing actvity in both Kuanza and Longa lodges.

Ahoy All, hope your week starts well. KWANZA is one impressive river. Needless to say, the fact that in 2003 the Kapanda dam was closed and since the rainy seasons have filled it to the max. 520 Mega Watts installed was quiet a feat during 17 years of Brazilian/Russian Colaboration on this vital project which supplies the capital city Luanda (ca 6 mio inhabitants) with electricity.
What's the news you will ask! Well, the ansence of the previous seasonality of the swelling river during rainy season meant, that many shallows now are growing thick bush, that does'nt simply get washed out to sea once a year. The weed line we were fishing Dorados and Tuna at doesnt appear anymore and the flooded marshland spawning grounds have ceased to promote Tarpon and Threadfin reproduction...
I wish not to halt development in wartorn Angola, but there is somewhat a downside to development here and there...
In context the fisheries in Longa River and the Catumbela down South in Benguela are getting better...
So lets jump on a bus and go fishing.

You're tottally right Pargo Man, Kapanda and the local fisherman nets had a big impact on the Kwanza.
You still get Tarpoon there from Nov to January (let's see what happens in the next few years), threadfin, jacks are still all around and probably with the "bico" getting longer we will see an increase in Cuberas.
The absense of weed lines is also worrying me, this year you see dorado all around and not concentrated, let's hope they don't abandon our Luanda seas.
Just three weeks ago I was lucky and found myself in the midle of the biggest school of dorado I've ever seen, around 150 / 200, they were hitting everything even jigs thrown at the surface ,after 15 minutes, and a lot of dorado, we took the trebles out of the poppers and started throwing poppers at them just for the fun of seeing the fish attacking the lures.

Hi Tuna, "tubarao" is more common in the "cold" South of the Angolan coast. We see some bulls in the Mussulobay though 10 miles out of Capital City Luanda. Last time swimmers got hurt though was 20 years ago. The estuaries of the mighty KWANZA should also qualify for bull shark, but I never hear of any catch. My kids play in the shallows just afront the RSA-managed lodge... and wade in to cast artificials.
The also RSA-managed desert "Flamingo lodge" just South of Port Namibe is cold/tempered all year round. Thats were they catch small bronzies and the likes even during the warm season Nov-May.
I recon we just got so much edibles fishing going on, that noone ever concentrates on shark fishing. All just theory... once offshore fishing you always run past small hammerheads. The largest I've seen in 20 yeras was 10ft. Mako apparently migrate with baitfish during the transition periods May and September/October. They hardly ever grow larger than 80 kgs.
