KP and Kayaks

How many of you fish with a KP off the kayak?
What size KP do you use and what setup i.e. line diameter, sinkers etc.

I use a 6inch Delux spooled with 0.60mmXX and a Elbe snoek glass rod. Really nice setup and fun to catch bottoms, but I don't see to many guys this side that fish with them.

There is a 7 1/2 inch spokie fitted with a one way drag especially designed for Kayak fishing. I use a few from the boat and also barbel fishing and they are great.

I use a 5 1/2 inch Alvey reel that does not swivel on the base, it can take 600m of 10Kg line. The reason I use 10 Kg line is that I find it difficult to break heavier line if you get get hooked up on the bottom while fishing from the ski. The reason for using an Alvey reel is that it does not have bearings but has a stainless bush and shaft. I use the solid 8 inch KP's when fishing from my boat.

IWYk, that sounds like a reel I need, do you know who sells them?

Neville, I agree the lighter line is better and it's not easy to break the 0.60mm off a kayak, the thicker line also drops slower so your bait takes a bit longer to get down. I'm looking at getting another KP so that I can fish one setup with a thinner line.
The thick line on the KP is however quite nice when you hook in to a big fish (unfortunately only sharks for me until now) and you can hold them off the reef, hakuna matata style!

4.Boat Reels: The 7 1/2” Drag reel has a reversible drag system, and was developed for paddle ski fisherman, who preferred the 1:1 ratio of our reels but need the drag whilst they are paddling. The 8”/9”/10” & 11 ½” are self explanatory, fisherman’s preference.

They would probably be about R450 bucks. Just send them an e-mail and they normally reply within a day. I have the normal black spokie not sure if they have the de luxe 7 1/2 inch with drag as well, just ask they will let you know.

Holds plenty of line as well.

Obviously the drag is not like a Multiplier reel drag but it is good enough for the intended use.

Good luck.

Ahh ok cool yes I've bough a few things from them online.

Worth a try at that price. I use a rubber band cut from car inner tube at the moment to keep the line falling off the spool.

Normally the website up-dates the price when you click on the product but it seems to be not working or I am too far away, LOL.

The drag is why I use mine for whipping and livies, no need for elastics etc. to keep the line in place, nice reels.

They may also be available in the deLuxe but I have the normal black spokie's.

Yes I got the same thing, website freezing.

I want to use it for live-bait fishing for kob in cape town, slow trolling livies behind the surf so the drag will be a great help. Also when fishing two rods.

Black spokie is all I need for kayak the delux I'll spare for R&S fishing.
