KOSI BAY LTB

We fished all three lakes at Kosi over the long weekend .  The water was extremely clear and 21 C which is pretty cold for the area. Except for live bait size fish we caught absoloutely ZIP while we were there.  Cold front and low pressure together with cool conditions did not help at all.

Speaking to someone from Richards Bay area we were told that the trick was to drop baits at a given drop-off and then take the boat at least 80 m away from the baits and put anchor so the Grunter did not actually see the boat. They caught some very nice fish.  Thanks for helping us trailer the boat on Sat. afternoon.

We stayed at Kosi Bay Lodge which was great and I can recommend a great ghielie if you go there

Thats the trick with Kosi, drop your baits on the drop off and retreat back at least 50 m. We always use double anchor system aswell, this stops the baits from moving. You need to check your baits at least every 15 min, as the cracker shrimp die quickly.

You can do the same fishing for kingfish with live bait. I have used this method in lake 1 and 2, lake three is normaly dirty so you dont have to worry about dropping the baits.

If the wind is blowing the right way a slow drift also produces results

Interesting what you said about the prawns dying on you, but we thread the whole prawn which I reckon will kill it straight away...is there another method....just through the tail section maybe???

Ja, the cracker do die when you put the hook through them, what I meant to say was that we found that they deterioate quickly and there seems to be some sort of a parasite in the sand that eats away at the inside of the cracker. This leaves you with bait which is limp, we make a point of checking our baits at least every 15 to 20 min.

I also heard of the guys tying on a thin sard fillet and then hooking a prawn on the end but just throughthe tail.
