Kosi Bay - Feb 2013

When you get a call to invite you on a trip to Kosi Bay, all  other things in life seem relative. We were booked from the 9[sup]th[/sup] to  the 15[sup]th[/sup] of Feb and our aim was to land the elusive GT.
1:30 AM and the 4X4 was already purring on the highway. With  a brief stop in Piet Retief we soon got to Kosi Bay town.  We reached the cabin at 9AM and settled in to  a light meal. With the high tide only at 15:30 we decided to wet a line off the  reef. Some nice rockcod and some other rock fish came out. A few were kept for  the evening braai.
3 of the guys decided to tackle the North beach for the  night shift. At around 2 AM they landed a lovely sand shark of around 1.8m in  length. Accidents happen so quick and while removing the hook from the shark my  mate gets the second hook lodged in his wrist ( check out the pics below)
The 1km walk back to camp seemed forever and then the drive  back into to Kosi Bay town to find the hospital.
Fortunately no major damage was caused and after some hilarious  moments at the hospital the guys were back at camp by 8 AM. They spent the  entire day sleeping. We had another stint off the reef for more fun with the  rock fish.
Sunday evening was a quiet night without much activity on  the surf. On Monday we decided to take a drive out to Black Rock. A truly beautiful  place. The water was absolutely clear. From the top we could see some huge fish  swimming by.  Trying all kind of bait couldn’t  temp any of these fish to bite.
We realised that without live bait our chances would be  slim.  So Tuesday morning we caught a few  livies and on the first cast a GT of around 3.5 KGs was landed. Another GT was  of about the same size was lost at the lip of the mouth.
The evening session was looking very promising and didn’t  disappoint ... Yet another GT of 4.6 KGs was landed as well as a Rock salmon of  around 5 kgs.
Wednesday evening saw the mother GT coming in to say  hello....  See pic. The fish was released  to come visit again.
Thursday only produced a few blacktails which went straight  on to the braai.
Friday the wind decided to blow a gale which prompted us to  pack up a bit earlier and head home. It’s amazing how time flies when you’re  having fun.
As for the mouth.... 3 weeks ago it was well over 200m wide.  By the time we got there it was about 100m wide and had moved from where it was  a year ago.
The channel at high tide was around 4 m deep. This allowed  the GT’s so come in to feed. I expected a lot more fish to come through though.
Being spring tide it made wading to the south beach easier  even though there were some deep channels to negotiate.

One step closer to paradise ... Hope they don't pave it and make it a parking lot.

Eina! I cringe when ever I see pics like that! Nice fish though.

Which route did you guys drive? I want to go down to Jozini in April but am not sure which route to take?

We took the N17 on to Bethal , then to Ermelo and to Piet Retief. From Piet Retief to Pongola N2 and turn off to Jozini.
The road is quite good. Between Pongola and the Jozini turn off there was one "Stop - GO"
