Kob vs Elf

Caught this Kob and Elf at the Fridge about two months ago. Only got my USB cable back now from the knuckle head that lent it. Time was about 19H00 just after sunset on the drop tide. Water had good rolling action with little or no current or backwash. Temperature was around 17°C, a bit on the cold side but the lack of visibility made up for that. I found that on the False Bay coast, the fish are more prone to bait in murky water than in clear water.

The Elf measured at 45cm and the Kob was 162cm. Bait was plain sardine fillet, no wrap! Trace was 1,2 metre long 17Kg Maxima with a 4,0 Mustad stainless steel short shank with a Bandit short steel trace. I used the round cylindrical foam floats that come pre-cut in 50 - 60mm lengths.

The rod was my 14 foot purglas Titan from Suburban tackle and the reel was my trusty Daiwa SL50H Sealine. Line was 15 Kg 0,45mm Purlin High abrasian mono.

The Kob was cut into steaks. Half was made into pickle fish and the rest was braaied with lemon juice, butter and coarse black pepper. Keep your Kingklip and Tuna! Gimme fresh Kob for a brai anyday!

Unlucky for my fishing buddy, though! As I was landing the Kob, I used a big wave to lift her onto the shore and he was standing in front of me trying to spot the fish in the dark! I wonder what it feels like to have a fish this size knock you right off your feet and end up with approximately 20 litres of sea water in your wader!

As a consolation prize, I gave him the elf and he was quite chuffed then!

Hi Mike,
I heard about this catch when i fished there next day at the fridge.it was full house & if i recall it rained that next day.

Coincidentally,i'd stopped briefly at Broken Rd prior to Fridge, and if I'd stayed at Broken Rd,I'd have caught Cob.

When returning to Broken Rd,from Fridge,an angler i often see & fish with, said he'd seen me stop & drive off,and straight after that he caught a 10kg Kob,i weighed personally. And that fish was about a metre long.

But Wow, a 1,6m Kob is a wopper.Congrats on catch.

Really nice fish!
