Kob up the west coast

Hi,

I have a feeling there are kob to be shot up the west coast in the winter (beyond Melkbos where they are at times in the summer).  I'm thinking of Cape Columbine and Stompneus Bay area.  Has anyone heard any whispers of anything like that?

Enjoy the weekend, diving looks OUT in the Cape!

I wanted too dive Jacobsbaai because we usually catch cob there and its normaly very calm. I was advised not to do so 'cause the locals told me there's probably a maize of fishing lines at the bottom...didn't go dive but I know the fish are there!

But seriously, most important is having pretty flat water.  Have not dived much up there, but imagine that a big NW will make it pretty lumpy and churned on the inside, and my experience form down this side is that the fish are in the shallow inshore waters more.

I think light SE is probably the best

JACOBSBAAI= Diving you can do its good for Hotties and Galjoen as for the Kob,it will make you dive in the bay and its not that deep there,aswell as loads of fishing line,and Cow shark (big bastards too) I am waiting for a good day to go clean up the place a bit,but as from today the water is not good to be diving down here.

Cape Columbine AKA Tittesbaai = not worth it as the water is rough and to dangoures right now,when it is calm there are loads of Hotties and Galjoen (only in my secret spot ) but as for Kob there I have not heard of any comming up.

Saldanha = Dive the front of the caravan park and the wreck,there have been some yellowtail,kob and the very odd Steenbra come up..but the water is normaly a very light brown colour (not the Kob kind )and there are loads of sharks there...

Diving near Langebaan... with the toothy critters i've seen there... not even if the kob was 10 feet thick...

I know about the bronzies and smaller sharks swimming around there but are there any bigger guys swimming around in the likes of gw's that you know off.

but on another note when and if this weather clears up i would like to do a trip up the west coat to try places like the wreck in saldanha in front the caravan park and maybe places around st helena bay and that so if you keen send me a mail and if there are any other guys that would maybe like to make a day or maybe even a weekend out of it lets get into coms with each other and make a plan out of it

i have heard of them, and i'm certain i saw one take a fish off a guy fishing from a boat about 100m from us at the line. The shark came almost out the water completely on it's side, had a sharp nose profile but it's stomache was towards us, it's stomache was perfectly white and i'm certain it had black tips on the pecs. But i was trying not to wet my pants on the rubberduck so i might be mistaken....

Also heard from various guys about the thresher sharks that were around. How dangerous they are and if they still are around in numbers i can't say.

Another thing is that current in langebaan is ROUGH.

I havent shot fish in ages, and even then i'd consider myself a pure amateur, but i'd get someone to drop me across the island and lie between the rocks on the other side of the channel on the western side of the island. you should be out of the current if it's incoming tide and you could wait for the elf and kob to come past.... U'll be out of the way of most boats etc.

as for thresher sharks they are relatively calm and ok i am just wondering about the gw's but as i say i want to go when it clears up and there some viz

I'm off to see the foc at one so I'll keep you posted.... it sucks being stuck out of the water! very keen to explore a bit up the west coast. have a good weekend all and post if you guys get some fish this weekend

About langebaan, is langebaan considered an estuary???

This is the regulation i read...
Regulations specific to recreational spearfishing
(11) The holder of a recreational fishing permit endorsed for spearfishing shall not catch, disturb, land, keep, or control:
(a) any fish listed in the Prohibited Species list of Annexure 6,
(b) more fish than the bag-limit listed in respect of each species in Species List of Annexure 6 during any one day. Furthermore, there is an overall cumulative daily bag limit of ten, irrespective of the species caught and provided that this limit does not apply to those species listed here with no bag limit, and to those with a bag limit exceeding ten;
(c) any fish smaller than, or of a mass less than, the size-limit listed in respect of each species in the Species List of Annexure 6;
(d) any fish during the closed-season listed in respect of each species in the Species List of Annexure 6.
(12) The holder of a recreational fishing permit endorsed for spearfishing shall not catch fish or attempt to catch fish in an estuary.
