Kob on spoon ...

Conditions for catching kob on spoon need to be pretty spot on and in recent times , say the last four years have not been "normal" and to top that , I , for one have not really gone fishing ...

But this past weekend , I noticed that things were lining up....water , tides , barometer reading and I know this trend all to well and as the saying goes , The TREND is your FRIEND...I go down to my spot on the Saturday early evening around 18h00 and it looks beaut...

About 10 throws into my session , I get an absolutely SOLID rattle ....another 5 throws and now the kobbie is on , properly ...BUT , I over react and the hook pulls out...

Sooo...a good hour passes and Im at my spot at 06h00 the next morning , conditions are now at their optimum and its about to change as the baro tops out and things go south again....

Im 4 throws in and Im ON...this morning Im ready steady eddy.....kobbie is landed , all of 60cm and into a high tife pool he goes...

A quick coffee to celebrate and Im on it again...another two throwa and Im on again....this time its a spicy kobbie...landed and touching the 75cm mark...

Well , well ...the trend of conditions wins everytime...

I left the kobbies on the bite as i was on door duty at Church that morning , so all in all a BRILLIANT morning gooiing lepel...

Im watching the weather systems coming along the coast and Tuesday looks good . I nip off work at 16h30 and get down to my spot at 17h30 ...water looked absolutely "dead" ...not a bait fish in sight , no Jonny Dykers in the shallows ...NADA , ZILCH.....
I give a few throws and call it a day ...the low pressure was arriving sooner than anticipated...we look to the weekend and its a dark moon spring approaching....

Just as a side note , these are the spoons I am throwing at the moment , for those interested...

As you look at the pic , the two on the right are my own design S shape spoon and out of tin , weight is 1.5 ounces ...

the other two are commercially available out of chromed metal , for testing newer areas and when the tide is getting a tad low during a session...

Mornings , this is the position as of zero hundred hours today , so that cut of low has come n gone , some rain and a west that was short lived...

That cold front has probably made landfall in CT by now and we will feel the brunt of it , I suspect later today....

I think . fishing this weekend , is going to be about timing ...Saturday arvie through to Sunday early AM will be the window....

Good to see you back Kenty!

Cant wait to read some proper reports!
Yes , good stuff...

These conditions have been bothering me for awhile , but certainly will be throwing a bit more again ...

I remember my dad telling me that back in the 70s , there was a three year period that the fishing did not feel "normal" , Im sure that is what Ive experienced up here along my stretch of coast and after one weekend it just felt right , I know it sound weird ...BUT...its all bout going fishing...

Update before I knock off for the day , ...that frontal system has now had "babies" and there is a cut off low in front of the main front , I believe CT is being lashed as we speak....

Its about timing this weekend....

Well , this weekend tides were not really to my liking , I do like an early morning outgoing tide and over the years, have rarely hooked a kobbie in the middle of the day , probably in 20 odd years have only done it twice....
Saturday was a blowout for me at my spot and I watched as the barometer was rising , Sunday morning early was the window , but a high tide , so i bided my time and waited until 11h20 for low tide to hit and the wind had subsided ...BUT the baro had turned and was already dropping as the next low pressure was approaching...

As you see in the pic , the water was around 22 and not up at all , gin clear and no surge...

I threw for two hours , but not a touch , lots of bait fish in the water BUT , that dropping baro kept the kobbies away...
We keep one eye on the approaching weekend...

Throwing spoon for kob , the conditions need to be pretty specific....one condition is the barometer , it needs to be rising and not standing still...

This past weekend was a perfect example of that .
While I have caught the odd kobbie in grubby water , on spoon , but probably only two spanning a 25 year throwing spoon for kob specifically...

In this pic you can see the trough out front and had tyhe water been clean on this morning , the kob wouldve been on the hunt...
Funny enough , lots of bait fish in the shallows...

Mornings Folks , well this past weekend went as predicted , now for me it was spot on as far as conditions are concerned ...

Saturday morning I am at my spot 05h30 , with a high tide at 08h06 and I do not normally like throwing tin into a pushing tide an outgoing allows you to keep your spoon in the water longer with a slower retrieve needed for the spoon to push water...

BUT , the water condition told me otherwise and the barometer was doing exactly as predicted...

I have a short coffee and watch the water for about 15 minutes , the sea was still on its head BUT not surging as such , just the heaviness of the big water....

I couldnt get onto my favourite pinnacle and had to throw from quite a bit further back....

I had an hours throwing and then called it....during the day i watched the weather for Sunday AM and everything was tracking true...

Sunday AM arrives and Im down at my spot 05h30 , low at 09h56 , PERFECT...

The sea had tapped off a lot and the swell was rolling in evenly...

First sign I see two jonnies diving in the shallows...as I wade out to my pinnacle , tons of bait fish and mullet in the water...NOW I am really excited!!!

Two loosen throws , then a proper throw into the attack zone and I get the faintests of taps ...weed?..rock?...kobbie?...

Readjust my drag , and back into the attack zone , half way into my retrieve ..KOB ON!!!..NOW..Im not on the front section of the pinnacle as the water is pushing already and I know about 10 meters out front I will have to try get the kobbie over and into the sloepie next to me to land him...

I get him just to the front ledge , hold tension and waiting for the swell behind to help push him over and as the swell gets to him , he kifts his head and shakes the 5/0 short shank out of his mouth....Im smiling and pleased , conditions , conditions ....nobody can tell me otherwise...
NOW , an old fishermans tale , you drop a kob , you may as well go home . True??....well , Ive believed it all the years...:fswim

Sooo.., I leave the kobbies for another day and feeling quite buoyant and pleased with myself indeed...

During the day Im watching the weather and the west comes through with a vegeance , and taps off to and even breeze , I check my baro and it has turned...Im planning a Monday session before work and as I wake this AM , I see the baro is at 1008hpk ....
Grab my gear and scoot down to my spot ...

Even more perfect than Sunday , and as I get onto my spot I see no less than 5 jonnies in the shallows out front...first throw of the morning , shad...and the next 20 minutes its shad every throw ...all ranging in the 30 to 20cm range...
I have a coffee and smile , the kobbies will not want my spoon with all this food in the water. and just then I spot two otters in the shallows to my right , both had fish and chowing them...I had to laugh and thought to myself , jip , I am now at the bottom of the line to get fish....😂😂😂😂😂

All in all Folks , for me , was a fantastic weekend of fishing ....
Stay tuned for the coming weekends report on conditions , on the East Coast AM thread...

Mornings Folks , well as I looked at the conditions last night and at the barometer , I really was excited for the prospects this early AM.....

The baro was rising steadly and when I woke up at 04h30 this morning it was sitting at 1022hpk , absolutely perfect for kob on spoon AND with a very slight west wind still puffing...

I wanted to be at my spot at 06h00 as it was an outgoing tide with a low at 08h06 , NOW..we are approaching a dark moon spring and as i got to the water I could see that there was a slight surge due to the looming spring tides...also the water was a bit up , although not on its head...

It is gin clear and around the 22 mark , temp wise....maybe , just maybe a tad too warm for the kobbies...

I clip on my DS tin spoon and start throwing , from throw 3 , Im into the shad and the next 40 ,inutes its shad , throw for throw...all razors and Im thinking , if the kobbies are here , once again too much food in the water ,,,

I swop over to my larger Slim Shady sppon . but still the razors took , i couldve worked through the shad and maybe the kobbies wouldve come on line , but , work was calling....

I left the shad still boiling out front and now we look forward to the weekend...

Stay tuned...
