Due to a lack of info of SA Bass venues, please tell us about a venue you fished for Bass recently.

I'll start :D

Disaneng Dam Mafikeng

1. Security
    Absolutely nothing!!! The Beer bottles and tins were lying all over the place and the gates were wide open. It seemed there was a party the night before.

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
    Non-Existant....... Bush toilets only

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
    None that I noticed

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
    I am not sure, but living in Botswana, we just drive there for the day usually... I         believe that camping is allowed there, but I doubt its very safe
5. Popularity
    It's not too popular, but the fishing isn't bad at all. Carp fishing done too

6. How busy it gets
    When we were there there was only one other vehicle with people fishing. It does get busy sometimes though

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
    Bank angling, or float tubes. I did not see any place to launch a boat.
    I think the banks get quite a bit of fishing pressure though, so a craft of sorts might be good

8. How well you did
    It was the first time Bass fishing for me, I caught about 6 or 7 largies. None of             them over a kilo, but good fun it was indeed

9. Location (Province, Suburb, Nearest Town) (Map if possible)
    Its due west of Mafikeng in the Northern Province

Just keep your eyes open when you are there and you should be ok. Many Botswana guys go fishing there on weekends too, so you should have some company. I think the lack of anything in this place helps keep it quiet, and also keeps it a good place to fish.

VASFONTEIN BASS ESTATE


1. Security
    Security is okay, Main house only several meters away from two main dams, separate dam a little dodgy but still safe.

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
    Non-Existant and no going to the bush, see point no 1

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
    Built up braai/s at main dams

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
    Only day visitors fishing from 06:00 to 18:00

5. Popularity
    It isn't all that popular with people who knows it, as it got alot of fishing pressure at times, fishing sometimes very difficult

6. How busy it gets
    It used to get exremely busy at times, but lately due to fishing being difficult its not that busy

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
    Bank angling only, too small for even a float-tube or kickboat.

8. How well you did
    Normally land about one to three fish on a morning stretch weighing about 300g on average. Managed to land a 1,7 kg kurper before

9. Location (Province, Suburb, Nearest Town) (Map if possible)
    It is located 20km's North of Pretoria

10. Directions  Take the N1 North towards Pietersburg past Pretoria.  After passing the Petroport that's built over the Highway take the next off -ramp "Wahlmansdal" off-ramp.  Turn left on top and travel down this road till it ends in a T-junction with the Old Warmbaths Road.  Turn Right and travel for about 1 to 1,5 km's and trun roght at the Soshanguve Road that goes over the Old Warmbaths Road.  Travel down this road for about 800m's to 1km and you'll see a tar road making a T-junction with the road you are on. Slow down, go past this road and trun right about 50 to 80m's further.

11. Entrance and other fees Entrance fees used to be R50-00 for the morining session and again R50-00 for the afternoon, however it seems that R50-00 is all you pay nowadays.

1. Security:
Securaty is tops!! You have to sign in at the gate before entering and the farm is surrounded with electric fences

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition:
Good facilities, it is a bit of a walk to the toilet, but the fishing area is surrounded by dense bush.......hint hint

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities:
hey have a place for a fire but I don't know if its for a braai, ask at front desk

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities:
Both of the above

5. Popularity:
Not popular with the town folk, so the fish are not under to much pressure.

6. How busy it gets:
Its more of a touristy tipe of getaway place, so it doesn't really get that busy.

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible.
They have a raft that people go out on for fishing, but you need to book in advance.

8. How well you did:
Well on a bad day we use to catch between 6 and 10 fishies round about 300g - 700g.

9. Location:
Western cape, about 20km out of Knysna. Take the N2 leaving Knysna towards George, drive for about 10km. As you get to the top of the first big hill outside of town, turn right into the Rheenendal turn off. Drive another 10km and you will see the sign on your right hand side of the road. Just follow the dirt road until you get the front gate.

I would advise that you phone and book before you go, they do tend to be full of nonsense at the gate.(044) 388-4604. As far as I remember it is R50 for a day visitor to fish.

Have a couple of good bass locations down in KZN that i frequent with good success. Will list a few every now and then as time permits but here goes.....

ALBERT FALLS DAM (MSINSI RESERVE)

1. Security is good and on many occasions i have left my camp site with fishing gear etc lying around and have never had anything stollen or damaged. Hourly patrol van on the camp sites etc.

2. Ablution blocks every 60m or so including on the pelican bay side which is good for bank fishing for carp as well as bass. They have all just been re done and are really excellent.

3. No Braai facilitys but hey make a camp fire....

4. There are sections for day visitors as well as several different camp sites in the reserve. To name them is Pelican Bay, Bon Accorde and Notuli camp sites. They also have very nice little chalets, i have stayed in them before very very nice.

5. Fairly popular beiing one of SA's permiur bass dams.

6. Can get rather busy over holiday seasons etc but off peak it can also get really quiete.

7. Both types of angling are possible but for bass would recommend even a canoe or small boat.

8. My PB of 5.4 comes out of here and she was caught from the bank at pelican bay on a topwater lure near the fence line. Also caught many many 3kg plus fish here.

9. KZN  Pietermaritzburg about 120kms from Durban inland.

SHONGWENI DAM (MSINSI RESERVE)

1. Security is ok but have heard of incidences where people leave trailors unocked and getting robbed but personally i have had no problems there.


2. Ablution blocks are sufficient


3. They have built in braai facilities.

4. You can camp there and there are day visitor sections.

5. Not so polular ( think its due to the fact of no petrol engine boats allowed )

6. Can get rather busy over holiday seasons etc but off peak it can also get really quiete.

7. Both types of angling are possible.

8. Have caught many small fish here biggest around 2.6kg.

9. N3 about 50kms from Durban heading towards Maritzburg

Hi All Here is a review of Goedetrou Dam (Lake Verbaan) Near Eshowe in KZN.

1. Security
    Security and camp sites do not exist here. I would recommend going in a group.


2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
    None...

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
    None....

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
    This depends entirely on whether you are in a group or not. If not then best day visit only. I have camped there but that is normally during the contests they hold there where my partner won last year.
5. Popularity
    Popular with the Richards bay bass fisherman and fast becoming popular with durban guys too.

6. How busy it gets
    Its really quiet there.


7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
    Would however recommend nothing less than a 2x4 for boat launching there though as now built ramp exist.


8. How well you did
    May partner won the Lake Phabane Eshowe social fishing club comp last year with a 3.4 I think it was. My biggest here is 2.7 kgs. Generally the water can be quite brown here like a chocolate milkshake.

9. Location (Province, Suburb, Nearest Town) (Map if possible)
    Its about 15 mins from the town of Eshowe. 1h 30 mins from Durban heading north.

Bank but not sure about boats. But there are Kayaks.

How well you did
I did very well. Stayed for 1 and a half days caught like twenty big bass about 1kg.

Hi there, i am from mahikeng, things at disaneng have changed for the better,
Providing you book in at the resort,
Its private owened, 7 chalets, nice for 500 per night, 4 sleeper, toilet bath hot water, fridge, cuttlery included, camping site at chatets very secure, well maintained ablution block and toilets, there is a slip for launching your boat, nice 5m sandy bank and green grass fron there till the chalet, thats on the disaneng side,

Kabe on the other side of the dam is lekka bush for the true outdoors man, bos kak style,
Kamping in the wild lol,
I fished both sides of the dam and stayed over on both sides,

My experience is that the fishing on kabe side is much better than the resorts side,

There are baber carp(monsters) black bass and kurper, the largest bass i pulled out was 3.5kg,

Even if you chose to camp in the bush, its cool, the ppl in the villages dont reaaly bother,

Hi Guys

I recently went twice to Oppikoppiebassfarm in Brits. They have functioning toilets, braai areas and on face value seemed safe. Costs R80 per angler ( chlidren don't pay) I caught a 1kg bass and i saw at least 7-8 (500g above) being caught over the two occasions. Really accessible as dams are not too big. Great structure rocks, trees and lilly pads. Some guys camped there and they reported no issues. There is pressure on the dams but it seemed that Flukes work quite well.

I don't know the owners, but i like the idea that i could arrive and leave in the dark... especially in summer
