Just saw the post of the beautiful giant tiger posted by Muhaha and got thinking of what do people do with their catches. I do know that some take a fish or 2 home to consume but what about the rest? Do you take fish home to consume or purely to prove to the neighbours that you did really catch the fish and the real thing cannot be disputed as an edited picture of someone elses catch?

I think it is a shame to kill a fish for no reason and I also believe it is acceptable to take a reasonable number of fish home but not what you do not need. I once fished with a club where this chap took home about 40 fish, that is crazy, what do you do with so many fish?

I support and practice catch-and-release and consider it relevant and necessary for conservation.

If the fish has been badly injured or dies whilst fighting, then other factors may come into play. Otherwise....release

I take home fish for the braai ( not always the biggest and not always the smallest )- usually the first one that is size for Sarah and myself. But believe me a photo to brag with lasts longer than the one you took to show every-one. There is no way you can post a live fish on a site but a photo speaks forever.

Should a fish not make it ( after the one for the braai )That then ends up in the freezer for a later stage.

Release them! I like beeeg fish and if you don't release the small ones then in 5 years there wont be many beeeg ones

I'm personally all for conservation, but there's nothing wrong with taking one or two fish home for the braai. Generally fish is something that is best enjoyed fresh so freezing them is pointless. In that case, go but some frozen fish.

Alot of guys will say that you muct release every fish, but I'll say if you going to eat it, there's nothing wrong with thet. Just don't kill them for nothing... I've seen fisherman catching and killing small fish for no reason and that really annoys me.

agree with everyone and Siemen's take that there is nothing wrong taking nice sized fish for pot. common sense is if its on endangered list then release it.

Seeing as this is on the freshwater thread, are we talking freshwater fish??

Release the lot as a piece of hake tastes better than any of them.

That being said, my grandmother can turn a carp into the best fish cakes you have ever tasted.

Catch and Release, I don't even use a keepnet.

I don't eat fish, so I take non home.

There is nothing better then catching a nice fish and then see it swim off when you put it back in the water.

dam fish i release them,will keep a small carp when i need bait for barbel but ill release the rest.
seafish keep one or two for the braai within my limits.

I would like to share some wise words with you. My father told me this when he gave me my first pellet gun." never shoot or catch more than you can eat" I have always stuck to this on all hunting and fishing trips.

I think this can apply to all forms of conservation.

I remember the story a friend told me... he was in a well-known fishing shop in Pretoria, when this guy walks in with a large bag.. he pulled out a dead 19kg carp, and "wowed" the shop staff with it... they congratulated him etc. When he was asked what he was now going to do with it, he replied: "Dunno, probably dump it somewhere, I dont eat these things...".... What a waste, and what an idiot. Takes a carp like that anything from 15 years+ to grow that big....

Like was said above, a photo is 100 times better, and you can share it with many more, and keep it in your album.!!

I am sure we can put together a lynch mob for the guy! I don't even own a keep net either. If a small carp is hurt it's usually barbel bait.
One thing I cannot take is the guys who cut off the head of the carp, muddie, !yellow! and chuck the rest away. I have caught many Barbel on Carp fillets as well as heads. Use the whole thing, rather than wasting is my opinion.

I am very selective on which fish I take home. I usually make fish cakes with them(and they are the sort of fish cakes that everybody loves). But if I catch anything bigger than 7kg and smaller than 4kg(freshwater) its going back.
