Okay, found them.

For a cat this size (mono is arguably better sub 17ft), it handles very well.

Needs nothing more than 2 x 40's to go like a bomb.

You thinking of ordering new?

To be honest, I have been going back and forward on buying a boat. I have owned a 16ft Kosi Cat that I bought second hand and had my fair share of outboard problems with two 50hp Johnsons on. So I think I would buy new when I do. I am not in a hurry to buy at all, but if I have a look at the market a new boat will break the bank: SeaCat 510 New R 375 000.00, Z-F16 R 400 000.00 etc, I do not know the price on the ButtCats and I heard that they are stable boats that are not that expensive.

They never made a name for themselves selling this size boat but I'm sure it will be fine. Can't comment as they weren't all that popular and I haven't been on this size Butt. I would like to know the price of this rig with basic specs like weight for comparison, I still like a small Cat especially if you going to bebottom fishing. I might be the only one but I have nothing to gain from promoting a cat.

New boats are expensive! You will battle to find a new 16/17ft hull on trailer with Fourstrokes on for less than R250,000. Then you start with electronics etc and you are looking at + R300k.

I know that the basic Supreme Craft 520 CC hull from Kamassi is R155 on a trailer. So maybe you can work on R125k for the Butt 490. But that does not include upholstery, rod holders etc etc. So call it R140k with all that. Add 2 x 40's (fours?) at maybe R100k? Back to the R240/R250k mark without electronics, hydraulic steering, fuel filters etc etc. You could maybe go 2 stroke on such small motors to save a bit if cash as fuel usage won't be that bad.

But then again, by buying new you get what YOU want the way YOU like it. There is a price to be paid for that!

Compare that to an Z-Craft F16 Slightly wider, same wight.
Length: 4.9m (16ft)
Beam: 2.2m
Flotation: bottles and foam
Bouyancy: 85%
Hull weight: +- 410kgs
Complete towing weight: 1600kg's
Hull warranty 2yrs

Not much in it.

I agree Bennie, and the Z is much better looking and you get it in a FC, which the Butt do not offer, but it comes at a price tag, also I think that bottle floatation is better than the foam filled hulls that the Butt offers. Z's are awesome fishing vessels but they come in very expensive in the market. Considering that I am from the inland, and is only going to use the rig four times a year, I would go for the cheapest brand with a good name in the market, but not brands that have a bad history like some hulls that is sold in Durban (I wont call names)

Seacat 510 with 2x70 four strokes is no where near R375000.
I can order you one now for R316000 and have one with 2x70 2 strokes for R270000.
The seacats are actually very good value for money.

Butt cat, apart from being ugly. No false transom. Batteries on the deck, no live well.
Are the gunwales low on this boat? if so, not suitable for jigging or game fishing.

A live well is vital to KZN fishing.

As for flotation, I prefer bottles and foam. I want drain plugs. You need the bottles for any water that does get in to accumulate for draining.  I believe in bottles behind the transom.

thats a typical original butt. low gunnels, so it cannot take alot of water on the deck. Foam filled, double glassed in. No bungs, no drain holes. design based on a surf board. When the engines are fitted on a butt cat only two bolts are used! at the top through the transom. At no point should there be a screw or bolt below the deck line. 100% sealed. If seal is breached that is were there may be a problem....

Open transom, the safest available. water runs off. scuppers are not really safe, that just mean your feet dont get wet.

BUT as bennie points out, this is not suitable to modern game fishing, low gunnels make it easy to fall off, nothing to lean on when spinning or jigging, open transom means the deck is ALWAYS wet, drop something on the floor and its gone!, it was developed for a commercial need. Modern butt cats rely on the same safe surfboard closed foam concept. Only two little bolts holding big 225- 250's on the back of those biggers butt cats! Modern butt cats also have a semi open transom, with cut outs in the sides, so water does flow onto the deck when rough. But there is a step that keeps water out in most conditions. Its a bit of a hybrid. Some guys want there feet dry all the time, me, id prefer a fully open transom like DR Fish.

How hardcore you want your boat to be is up to you at the end of the day. different needs different boats!

Have you considered an almost new boat? I'm not saying this cos I'm selling but there are few deals out there that will top this and rig is practically new!
