Jozini 1st timers

Hi all

I am new to the forum although iv lurked a bit.

I was just wondering if any1 can drop me a few pearls of wisdom.

I am planning to take a few clients for a weekend of tiger fishing April 2010. the problem being that i have no knowledge concerning tiger fishing or jozini for that matter(all i know about jozini is that u pass it on the way to sodwana)
ok so here is what i need to know:

BAITS

what to use artificial or fresh ?

ACCOMMODATION

ive made inquires at the nkonkoni tiger, camp any good? any other recommendation ?

are there guides available ?
permits for boats?

if some1 can be so kind any advice would be very much appreciated.

We went last year, stayed at Nkonkoni, awesome camp! They have a boat there that you can rent for R150/hr + petrol, and they know a few good fishing spots.
The dam can get rough because we sank a bass boat there in bad weather, so go with a proper boat. We caught most fish on sardines and chicken hearts including a tiger of 4.5kg. I had a few takes on Rapala Tail Dancers and even on dropshot.
Actually getting ready to go again, leaving tomorrow.::S

Try nkwazi lodge in the river section very organized and not too expensive considering what you get . We mainly fly fished with good success but sardine and live bait did produce some big fish.

try Shayamoya- looks like a really nice place... got it from mias in a brochure... never tried tiger fishing but hopefully next year and get some good fish...:wfish

for boat hire, they also have a tented camp on the shore of the dam, he only takes 4 fisherman and maybe a guest.

which comprises very comfortable airconditioned chalets just outside the park entrance, prices are very reasonable.

for bait tiger safaris have an excellent gillie, Bekkie who will load the sardine fillets, live bait can be good, tiger fillets can be good, lures can be good such as copper spinners, fire tiger & red hed halcos :fishn

Don't forget about the Kurper, some lovely specimens aroun so take kariba worms which are also excellent for live bait

Circle hooks are good, as are bass hooks size 4/0, for reels a bait runner reel works very well as more tigers are lost through early strikes, let them run a little then they tend to hook themselves. If you don't have a bait runner, let the spool free to let the fish run, the slightedt bit of tension and the tiger will drop the bait.

Keep the rod tip down, infact strike with the rod tip as low as you can manage, although if the fish has picked the bait up and run it's normally hooked itself, the line must always be kept tight the moment there's any slack they will try and many times successfully to throw the hook.

Asthe tiger comes to the boat it will swimm side to side, up and down, net it and let it go asap after a photo, they build up so much lactic acid that many of the bigger fish die after capture. On my recent trip I saw a few nice tigers floating belly up which was quite sad.
If you catch a monster take photo's, measure lenght and girth, revive it in the water and release, the taxidermists have moulds for just about every size.

My recent trip pulling Halco's, the fish tended to be on the belly hook, suggesting they came in sideways for the take.
Baiting sadine fillets with the flesh on the outside, use a whole fillet each time with no weight.
The remaining sardine head can also be used, working the hook through from the fillet side through the mouth.

just on thing maybe some of you ever helpful sealiners can assit with, ive heard the road down there is dodgey to say the least.

which route would you recomend from joburg to jozini,years ago in my scuba days we used the secunda,ermelo,piet retief route but ive heard there is road works going on.

Ja, road not the best but the route you suggested is fine. Just watch for the road works which have been on-going for ages! Not many other options available to you I'm afraid. Enjoy!

Anyone stayed at the Sodwanahengelklub chalets??? I've made a booking there for October.Just want to know if its save,going during the week so will be very quite.
