Joining Mainline to Mainline to leader...

my cuz assisted me joining my mainline to mainline (joined with fig 8, both the same diam) we then used BIMINI - DOUBLE FIG 8 to  LEADER.

when i just used mainline straight with BIMINI - DOUBLE FIG 8 to  LEADER it felt as if i cast much further than what i am doing now. Is it my imagination or is it that i am now more restricted for distance????

Hi mangi

thats correct. i fished a rocky area after loosing my leader and then just took off line and added more line and then joined my leader.

I can't quite understand the question here as it would seem that in both cases you used a bimini in the mainline then joined that bimini to the leader using a figure 8

If however the difference is that once you used a bimini to leader then seemed to get better distance with a mainline to leader without a bimini I would better understand.

The thicker your leader the less distance you get on the cast.

Bimini with a a long double loop to a thicker leader could well influence your cast negatively versus a spyker leader knot to a thinner leader.

The bimini is just used to maintain the highest possible breaking strain when targeting bigger fish.

Fishing over reef it's advisable to rather not use the bimini as your line will often break between the rod tip and bimini, maybe less than half way losing you a lot of line.

With a direct knot between leader and mainline the line normally breaks at the connection saving line and causing less pollution.

Take off more mainline than you usually cast. If your average cast is say 100 m then add 120m of new line !
That way you not casting out the join.

Best bet is to have braid backing, then if you loose line, you just top up the mono which is 200m.

I think Homie is on to something here. Your distance will be affected if you have two joins (mainline/mainline knot and mainline/leader knot) passing through your guides when casting.

Take off more line so that it is just the leader knot that passes through. For rock fishing I only use the bloodknot. Much quicker to tie and like Enigma said, the line parts at the knot saving you alot of line!

Bimini in mainline joined to leader with a double fig 8 works lekker on sandy beaches where you'll break off less.
