Joining Fireline to Fireline ????

Hi Guys

I have a new reel and I have a 100yards of 20Poud Firline. I was thinking of using the 20 Pound as a backing with 6 or 8Pound Fireline.

Can anyone help with the best not for joining Fireline to Fireline. I think the Double uni will work but am hoping for something with a bit more strength.

Thanks

According to Geoff Wilson, the knot guru, the only safe way to join two gelspun (FIRELINE) superlines is with the Bimini & Cat's Paw knot. He reckons all other knots will slip. See FAQ section on knots.

I joined fireline last night. As Reefie says. Double bimini. Then Cats paw. It worked beautifully.

just wondering. what about doingthe spider knot. simpler than the bimini. reason is im wondering whether spider knot on briad as well as mono joined with catspaw is good. the spider knot wil leave a slightly smaller knot that bimini.

The spider hitch with actually be slightly thicker than a proper bimini twist..remember when u using low breaking strength line eg 8lb or 10lb line u want to use a knot with 100% breaking strain like the bimini rather than the spider hitch..its just so much more reassureing..

Hi Guys

Thanks for that. I tried a Bimini Twist on Fireline last night ( first time ). It looks great but one question - Is the loop supposed to slip tight like a noose?

Iggy, ??? not sure what you're referring to about the loop on the Bimini? Have you had a look at the diagrams in the FAQ knots section? Once the Bimini is done, you have a large loop (that doesn't slip or move). You make the same Bimini loop on the line that you are joining to, and then join the 2 loops with a Cats Paw knot...

Hope this helps. Ask if you're still stuck?!

I mean the the Loop tightens like a hangmans knot????? Obviously something wrong. I did use the instructions from the FAQ Knots Thread.

OK Iggy, if your loop is slipping like a hangman's noose, eish den dere's sumfin wrong bru! I've thought about this and I think I know what may be the problem....

A Bimini twist in Fireline or Braid needs to have 60-70 turns... to stop it slipping. The thinner your line diameter, the more turns you need in the Bimini. I do 60 turns in 12 lb Fireline and in 50lb Braid. The thicker the line used, the less loops in the Bimini.

From 70 turns in 6lb Fireline, decreasing to 25-30 turns in .55 Monofilament.

I'm sure thats the problem?? Hope it helps you.

Not wanting to stir the pot here, but I read a recent line and knot strength test in Sportfishing recently, conducted with over 50 brand sof 20 pound line, both mono and braid, and something I found VERY interesting was as little side bar where the editor had tested 8 turn bimini's versus 12 and 25 turn bimini's....
I like most, and like the editor, believed that when using briad, one needs to double the number of turns...
But the test showed that the 8 turn Bimini in Braid was significantly stronger than the 12 or 25 turn....
This test was conducted with a knot tester, and tying 4 knots per line, and 4 tests per line....

Food for thought hey?

Nepps, have you still got that article? I must try get a copy. Let me know what month it is, so I can try source it?

Interesting that it says exactly the opposite of what Geoff Wilson says?!

Reefer,

I will see if I have it... I bought the Mag while I was in the US so it actually might still be on our shelves here... I thin it was actually Saltwater Sportsman, Not Sportfishing....although now that I checked the site, I'm not so sure...
Anyway, I'll see if I still have the issue and if so I'll scan it and send it to you

There you go.... mana to you Ghost, you're a champione!

@Nepptune :swear:headb:swearArrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Now I gotta retrain myself with all my knot thinking!! Some amazing test results.... so amazing, in fact, that I've got to admit that I'm still not that convinced with these tests! How can this chaps tests be so radically different from everyone else who has done tests on the same things??:dunno1

Aiyayaai!

The other thing that is strange, is that he doesn't even test the tried and tested "South African Fig 8" - the Double Centauri??? We all know it here to be the best knot for a variety of purposes, beating the Palomar hands down in just about every application?!

Further to that... he doesn't test the Cats Paw method of joining line.... which we all know to be by FAR the strongest knot of joining braid??

Seriously confuzzed now....::lostit: and also suspicious....
