Jig Heads

I’m a dropshot newbie and I’m busy gathering info on tackle for my business trip Madagascar.

My question is regarding jig heads, I have managed to find some on the web but I haven’t found any in the tackle shops except a big kit of bandit jigheads with mainly huge hooks.  Any comments on Berkley and Powershot jigheads (sold at droptshot.co.za), they good for the salt or are there other preferred makes?

Regarding the size of the hooks when rigging a fluke or similar, how long should the hook be compared to the lure, about third (6” fluke requires a 2” long hook)?

Do painted heads make a difference?

I don't know your location, but all tackle shops in Durbs sell jigheads.

Powershot jigheads are okay, but I would only use them for fresh or light saltwater

Berkley Jigheads are my favourite by far. The standard ones are good for everthing although but they are made out of a fairly light gauge wire so I would not tackle big fish on them. The nitro jigheads are more aerodynamic (lol) and are made out of a stronger gauge wire so therefore they are best for big fish.

The longer the shank of the jighead the greater the effect on the action of the lure, so therefore for a rule of thumb I cover just past the head.

I haven't used any painted jigheads but I don't think they will make much difference (Like the eyes on the older powerbaits).

The new thing seems to be hiding the weight in the lure

Dude what shops are you going to? Mias and Sollies will have jig heads.

South... MIAS in Woodmead have everything you need for dropshot. Plain Berkley jigheads, painted ones, whatever you like... bucktail jigs and then some. Then they got a huge selection of Gulp stuff/Powerbait/Zoom etc etc

Guess I didn’t look hard enough when I was at Mia’s Woodmead on Monday, all I saw was the Bandit jighead kit at the dropshot area and nothing at the bass area, will have to take a look again (and actually ask for assistance :doh)

Ja OK... the problem there is that all their dropshot stuff is spread all over the place. I know that the jigheads are at the top end of one of the isles on the LHS of the upper floor. The Gulp baits are way back on the LHS behind the rods.

[align=left]Went to Mia’s and saw the jig heads, thanks for the info.  I see that they also stock the Bandit jig heads and that they are on Mustad hooks, not sure if they are salt resistant though[/align]
