jetski tackle

I think it may be a personel choice but I heard that trolling from a jetski with a thick flurocarbon leader  about 8m produces more hits than fishing with wire,I am new to the game and wondered if anyone could comment.I fish mainly on aliwal shoal.

Does anyone know if using a clip when changing your lures affects the swimming action of the lure ? and how reliable and strong are these clips ?

Generally I have heard we should be trolling at about 20km/h is this correct ?

Your assistance would be appreciated.

When trawling a lure, don't use wire.... Might loose a couple of lures but produces a lot more strikes! Trawling live or dead bait, use dark coulored piano wire. A 1m trace wire/line is tied directly to the lure/bait and the other end, either a loop knot or a power swivel. The snap-on swivel clips on to the trace and is connected to your main line via a 3m wind-on leader.

I buy my wind-on leader from Paul Baulcherds @ R35.

Howzit Stuart,

When pulling lures do not use wire as it does give your lure a better action and some days can produce the bite over wire, when choosing a fluro one needs to be carefull in your choice as a lot of fluro carbon leaders on the market are quite brittel and i find either ande or siglon to be the best.

If you do want to use clips choose the most expensive as small cheap and nasty clips could pull open on a bonus fish, which sometimes happens when pulling lures,i personally prefer to tie a new lure every time as i am confidant about every knot i tie.

It all depends what species of fish you want to target and what lure you are pulling as your speeds can vary from 8km's an hr to 30km's an hr.Different lures are manufactured to be pulled at varied speeds.

This is not cast in stone and is my personal opinion.

Cheers

Hey Stuart, think we might have been fishing together before (with Gavin).. Its Mike here..anyway just want to add my 5 cents, have been using only fluro Carbon and haven't lost any traces yet... I am using 40lbs fluro and it has been going well for me, Personally I don't like the wire leader, I just think when fish are not in abundance that every little finesse helps when fishing, PS picked up a dog tooth barracuda on Sunday backline at umkomaas with only fluro and didn't lose the fish, now it might have been just luck but I have also been picking up Couta with just the fluro carbon and no steel leader and haven't lost a fish or lure yet like everyone told me I would..
I do agree with brown dog though, the fluro is very hard and is brittle and could weaken easlily at the knots, so re-tying knots after every fishing trip might just do the trick

I am ot the expert and also just talking out of limited experience

Cheers
Mike
