"Jacques went out on the Animal Ocean boat with owner and operator Steve Benjamin and on the day Steve had a new 'shark deterrent' device with him for testing. The manufacturers sent it to him for 'real world' testing and Jacques had a camera...needless to say not very successful but very entertaining

This video is 100% factual and shows only that the device does not work with these species of shark and does not aim to refute the claims by the manufacturer. Viewer discretion is advised."

hahaha, back to the drawing board I reckon :)

Quick question though Landshark, do you know what camera they used to film this?

I know with the SharkShield Freedom devices, the manufacturer's claims do not cover scavenger sharks, but only predatory sharks such as Whites, Hammerheads, Zambies etc. This is due to the Ampulli of Lorenzini sensory organs being highly developed in predatory sharks, and underdeveloped in scavenger sharks such as the seven- gill.

Does this manufacturer claim the device to be effective on all sharks? What sensory organ of the shark does this device target?

Hi bear12,

I did a bit a checking and the one they have in the vid is called the AquaShield.

On their site they mention the Ampullae of Lorenzini and don't specifically exclude any sharks, only mention that sharks, stingrays and the platypus possess the necessary receptors to acknowledge the generated field.

Lolol !! that's a Fail Of note .
It's Designed to Choke the Shark Once Eaten , leaving a bad taste in his Mouth so when he thinks about eating a human again he Remembers the LAst aqua shield he ate ...

Fail fail Fail .
Made in Usa .

From what I can gather off their website, its basically a magnet? Unless the shark has a pacemaker or braces, I don't see this device warding off an angry taxman

Well I think they could have saved some time, by reading the website and drawing conclusions from that alone.

Key Elements:

Does not require batteries or charging!
 AquaShield is always ON.
 AquaShield will last indefinitely!
Due to the nature of the generated field, it will not agitate the sharks!
 AquaShield is virtually indestructible!
 No operating depth restrictions!

It probably also comes in a silicone bracelet option.

I can and have done the same test with my Shark Shield on cow sharks with the same effect. I've also noted that Raggies aren't 'that much' affected by it. They don't come closer, but they don't move away either at about 4-6m( I haven't bothered trying to get closer).  Bronzies move away, but not in a hurry.

Anyone else got a Shark Shield? What have you noticed?

^ Thank god for that, I better get one so the next time I encounter a rabid Platypus I will be safe.

:p

Shifty.

Classic, especially this one : "Due to the nature of the generated field, it will not agitate the sharks" So how do they reckon it repels the sharks?.... by singing it a soothing lullaby???

I also had a similar experience where I dropped the antenna of my Shark Shield right onto a big black ray with no affect.

Checking the sharkshield.com site they mention this:

"All predatory shark species are repelled by the Shark Shield. These include Great Whites, Tigers, Zambezi (Bull), Mako, Oceanic, Grey Nurse, Hammerhead sharks.

Some sharks, in particular the bottom feeders, including Woobygong, Carpet and Port Jackson sharks, have their Ampullae of Lorenzini located under their snouts and as such have a diminished response to the Shark Shield wave form. A small number of sharks such as the Seven Gill shark have a diminished Ampullae so are less affected. The sharks that fall into these categories are in general, not considered dangerous to humans."

raggies dont seem to take notice at all.at struisbaai you busy lining up for a shot and you look sideways and theres a big fat raggie parking off next to you with a look as if to say"come on take the shot ,i'm hungry"

As long as it works on the GWs, I'll be happy with it, but I don't fancy doing the test myself. Anyone got a GW in their swimming pool that I can experiment on?

Oh and I had a pyjama shark wiggle its way between my legs while I was doing an aspetto while wearing my Shark Shield. Luckily they aren't man-eaters :)

Got an email from Shark Shield in Oz. The SS does not work on Raggies -
"... we don't fully understand why but it may be that they are more primitive sharks and have a lesser developed Ampullae of Lorenzini sensory organ. Grey Nurses(Raggies) are considered harmless."

I'm not too sure about their definition of 'harmless' though, for me the word 'armless' springs to mind when thinking of Raggies.

Ha ha ha , I'm glad you guys enjoyed our little bit of fun in the mud waters with the sevengills :)

And yes, from what I can see the Aquashield is a box of magnets. In fact it's stuck to my fridge right now
