Shuraj:

I don't know much about the dam, it's been my second time fishing there, but I'll share what I know. Two weeks ago I went there and fished from the side of the first photo in my post. From the second I had my line in the water I started to get little bites, my policeman bounced up and down but nothing took.

My friends son started to pull out a few carp varying from about 100g - 500g. I decided to stick with the slightly larger hooks and started casting deeper, but then all just went quiet.

I was using TCP mielies and supercast groundfeed, my one setup was dipped with garlic favour and the other one was a sweet dip. I had no luck what so ever and blanked for the whole day.

On Suday I decided to try the other side of the dam, where the jetties are. I noticed the dam is a lot deeper on that side, I tested the depth with my landing net and it with its handle disappears under the water by the jetty.

I used the same setup as previous for my rods and caught one fish from both setups. Since it was quite deep i decided not to cast too deep.

Thanks, the reason I took the first photo is if you take a good look at the sand, you'll see Hippo tracks!

@ Daniel

thank you for sharing.

Next time maybe try a variation of smaller  baits and play around with the distance and dips .

But still a good result for winter.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I was just told somewhere not to go to crazy with different flavours, but suppose if you don't experiment, you'll never know.

Try and get as much info on the venue and ue that as your base.

Always start with sweet and then you can add and remove what is needed.

Remember what you put in you cant take out.

Hey Daniel ! nice memories i was there at J dam maybe 3years ago last but then they started to implement strict control as u go through the last gate between the two dams ..asking for fishing license and permit and such is it still like that ? and then just after that the whole dam was poisoned somehow and thousands of fish died ..and i never been back

Thanks again, your advice is appreciated!

@MAN VAN SEE

The security is still there by the second gate, but not as strict. They asked the person infront of me, but both times I've visited they just let me through. Wish they would up the security a bit more though, I've heard that people have driven out with fish in their cars!! Terrible

Stricter security will just make it a better place to fish in the end.

I've read the thread on Sealine about all the fish that died in J-dam, really sad. I'm just glad the dam is still a great spot to go wet your line and catch a few big ones. It seems the impact of all those dead fish wasn't as bad as it seemed? Well I can't really comment on that, since I only recently fished there for the first time.

Yes I see, will definately try that spot out next time I fish there. This weekend a buddy and I will try out Rondevlei. Apparently there are some monsters in there as well!
