Ispingo Beach Lagoon Pollution

The discovery of hundreds of dead fish at the Isipingo Beach Lagoon, earlier today has infuriated Isipingo residents. At this stage, it is believed that an alleged chemical spillage led to the death of the fish.
A member of the Isipingo Island Institute, Larry Singh said, “I was notified this morning that there were fish found washed up on the banks of the lagoon and some were trying to jump out of the water. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the water was black and a horrible stench could be smelt in the air.  Over 100 fish such as tilapia, grunter and mullet weighing over two kilograms were found.”
He added, “The Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife took water samples for testing to ascertain the cause of the water contamination.  We are still awaiting a response from the Department of Water. Residents have been urged not to sell or purchase fish from the lagoon.”

Members of the public in the Isipingo vicinity and surrounding areas are urged to be wary when purchasing fish from fish traders, who sell from their vehicles, etc.
This comes after findings of fish found afloat and washing up the banks at the Isipingo Beach lagoon. Team Alpha visited the site and viewed the fish upon the banks, still alive in many instances. It is alleged that the fish may contain chemical pollutants and can be hazardous to consumers’ health.
Allegations of chemicals being dumped in the lagoon have surfaced. It is believed that the Parks Board was on site. While Alpha was at the lagoon, members of Isipingo SAPS and Ezemvelo were also present.
Fishermen flocked to the area to net a catch for a possible profit. It has also been alleged that the odour and the fish afloat is due to the lagoon being deprived of oxygenated water and the decomposition of water hyacinth.
Some members of the Isipingo Beach CPF are working relentlessly to ensure that the relevant departments identify and resolve the issue as soon as possible.
