Is Moving Fish Illegal?

So here is the question.

My friend own a nice big property with a nice huge dam. The dam wall was rebuilt 2 years ago, so I don't think there can be many fish.

Now if we go fishing and keep the fish alive to release them in his dam, is it illegal to do so? Is it not better to do this than to kill the fish?

Its illegal to transport or relocate any freshwater fish as well as to catch and sell it .

Catch and release only

Thanks. The thing is just this. How long before our dams are empty? At least on a private dam, we can control what happens.

The other day at Bronkies, I saw 3 guys fishing Bass. The one guy caught one. Took the hook out, threw the fish on the grass and then turned around and went on fishing. The poor Bass was definately going to die a slow death.

Anyway, what can you do? Illegal it is....

Are no such thing as "fishing cops" in sa? Maybe someone should start with that and demand that each dam should have 1 or 2 cops, depending on the size. These cops can them look at proper handling. Amount of fish taken, etc. And fine the people who think that fish are just fish...

It is illegal to transfer fish from one water resource to another if the fish is foreign to the dam transferred to.

If it's a private dam you may not allow the fish to get in a forein river or dam ie in case of a flood. No one can however tell you what to put in your private dam.

I was going to suggest you find out from the local authorities regarding this but I doubt you will find a litterate that can help you.

There are some fish experts, I suggest you contact them and just discuss your intention to them. They will be able to advise you on what would work and which species will live together.

Another concern is there should be enough water and food for the fish to live in. Well, otherwise the fish drink all the water... ;-)

So even al doen jy dit skelm kan jy groter skade as goed doen by jou dam.

Dankie

Why not just buy fingerlings from a fish farm and stock them properly and manage it the right way, this is legal and the best way to do it. Taking big fish is usually not succesful.

I converted my pool into a pond in 2008. Put barber and some kurper. The kurper were about 10 centimeters. After the first winter (2009) they spawn and today we got a whole lot of small guys, and the original ones are over 20 cm.added 2 small carp.

Theres some folks that do this illegally ,i dont really mind [none on my biz] BUT theres some guys which ,claims to have the relevant paperwork [naughty boys] in order to poach fish out of Rivers ,and relocate to Dams and ponds [and then charge hungry fisherman to catch them ] sorta selfish if you ask me!!

I do feel rather upset about the fact that theres some of these guys in the western cape , where the piscatorial society, and a few others involved try their UTMOST best ,to look after the limited waters we have access to.

Altough i will not urge you ,to NOt, do what you wanna do, my advice would be is to take properly care of the transport ,livewell , and rather drive 3 or four times than letting the fish fry in a bucket .Your fish will be very happy if you take care of them and a plus is they will easyly settle in in their new home .

Why not get in touch with someone like Ziggy Kullenkaumf , owner of Wiesenhof , he could help or even beter will be able to give you Fry ,and good advice .

i think theres alot of info about this on the net...the first thing they say to stock is kurper fingerlings... keep them for 1 or 2 years and then start introducing other species like bass etc so they have a food source. I think they said you have to watch out for carp taking over after like 10 years because they get so big and live so long. why not get some yellows?

after the things iv seen done to fish from our local waters i have no problem with people taking a couple of fish for private dams so long as they make sure the dam is "able" to sustain them.

It's illegal without a permit.  Many indigenous fish have been unwittingly translocated to area where they should not be and as a result end up destroing other ecosystems ie Catfish decimating Cape Kuper populations

It is possible to get a permit from dept agriculture but being in Pta your best bet is to approach the fish breeding station at Harties (next to the harties Aquarium)

They could also help you with affordable fingerlings of many fish that you could legally stock your dam with

You need a permit to translocate fish. If it is endemic fish you should stock it in the area where such endeminic fish naturely occurs, eg barbel not in western cape (even blue kurper and vlei kurper are not indegenous to western cape). The same for redbreast kurper - supplied by Hartbeespoort Dam fishing nursery, cannot be stock in your farm dam in Pretora outside the natural distribution area of redbreast kurper. There is still a ban on stocking of yellowfish because the authorities don't want different yellowfish species (even gene pools of the same species yellowfish) to (further) be mixed, for the sake of conservation of the different yellowfish species. Alien fish species also need a permit and can only be stocked in the areas authorised (most areas are authorised, but eg will not be allowed to stock bass in a nature reserve - as is claimed to be done by somebody in Klipvoor Dam.)That is the law (and good reasons for it).

You dont need a permit if you by from a registered supplier...... How do you think pet stores get away with selling freshwater fish for relocation into your homes/ponds/fish bowls....... Harties Aquarium is your best bet. there is no difference between a man made pond and a man made dam, one is just bigger.
