I used canned boiled potato before, as big as an egg and caught some nice carp on them!

You can get carp on all kinds of stuff. In Cape waters fresh pineapple is very effective. Cut chunks, shape them into roughly round shapes and thread them on like you would with boilies.

When I started out specimen angling I used chickpeas at first and later moved to lupins when I found a cheap supply, Lupins are first rate particles for carp fishing and dead cheap to boot.

In George dam many years later I found a spot where num-num berries grew over the water and carp would eat the berries that dropped in the water. Needless to say I caught plenty carp on freshly picked num-num.

Lupins are lupins. There are many great natural baits yet some guys only want to use tigernuts.

You can buy lupins at any farmers' co-op. Agricol sells them in the cape. Prep them like you would do with maize, add flavour if you like, plain is also fine. You can dye them with food colour, I used to make them yellow. 3 lupins on a hair is a big bait for big fish.

Some supermarkets also stock them. You can also get them already cooked and bottled or tinned.

Been using lupins for a while, bought a 20kg bag from my local coop.

Great stuff, so easy to use, no cooking. Just let them soak 24hrs before yr trip, add your additives to the soak and off you go.
Beware they expand a lot, fill your bucket 1/4 lupins with 2/3 of water. Don't leave them too long or they will go off.
Great ground bait option to add bulk to your other more expensive offerings, such as other particles or even with boilies. Cheap as chips too.

I have recently acquired 25kg of maple peas too, will start experimenting with them in the near future.

I wouldn't buy from Food Lovers Market personally, simply because of cost. You can get them a lot cheaper at the co-ops and as DocPhil said, prep is easy as. If you're on a budget, Lupins fished over chick-chick groundbait takes a bit of beating for big carp.
