Hello, I am new here as you can see. I am a spearo from Spain, 30 years old, I have been reading you around here for the last week or so.

I am very interested to know things about spearfishing in South Africa. Equipments, onshore fishing (my equipment is not for offshore nor for blue water hunting), Currents, SHARKS (We don´t have any here in Spain)

... and you might be wondering why would I wanna to know this.....?  I will tell you that I am going to visit your wonderful country for a month next November 11th and I would like to know if I can go there with my equipment and catch something... or at least see anything without getting intro trouble with currents, waves, etc

I have a 90 cm speargun (picasso century) and a 7/5 mm thick wetsuit, large fins, bouy, reel in the speargun, etc...

I would like to have a little info about what´s there, and get to know if should I go there with my equipment or not.... (I will take my mask, fins and swimming suit, of course!!!)

Thank you in advance

Nice fishings!!

Lorenkiller,
your equipment sounds fine for some shore spearin gin Cape Town.... where are you planning on visiting? if you do come to CT I can take you for a shore dive or maybe even a boat dive. If you are going for yellowtial or other larger fish or if you are heading up the east coast you will need a larger gun for the bigger fish and cleaner vis.
Give me a PM if you need any further info

Eckart, Flippie, Thank you very much. Unfortunately I am going to Durban, to do there a professional diving course, so I will not have too much spare time!! What a pity I would love to know all South Africa, but because of this it is hard for me to find time to spearfishing and less to travel around there.

I am thinking not to carry my spearguns with me, because it is going to be worthless.:( but I will do my best  on taking info to know about spearfishing in the east coast . Thanks for all.

I am going to send a few pm to people around durban to see if they can tell me more.

Thank you very much, both of you have been very helpful and nice for replying!!

Hi Lorenkiller

How long are you going to be in Durban and where will you be based? Give me a call when you get to Durban and we can organise something - my mobile number is 0832277088. Your suite will be to warm for Durban as you won't need anything thicker than 3mm and your gun a bit short but I'm sure we will be able to make a plan. Unfortunately I have just bought a new boat and will only have my seaworthy at the end of the month but if you are still around then we could go out. If you are half a reasonable swimmer shore diving will be fine if we add a bit of local knowledge and don't worry about sharks - we feed them surfers so they don't worry us

cheers

Hi there Paddy!! I am going to Durban next week, I will arrive there on Saturday 14th and going to stay until Dec 19th. i am staying in "Bluff" neighbourhood.

Have you dived a lot around there?

Which is the length of your spears?

Have you taken a lot of fishes? Which kind?

Hope that you fish a lot with your son/daughter in the boat

Thanks for replying

Hi,

I grew up on the Bluff so know it very well, there is a lot of reef that is easily dived from shore going from a few meters to well over 20 but the surf can be a bit of a challenge if the swell is up and you aren't used to it. Most guys use guns from 1.1 - 1.3m and there are both reef and pelagic fish to shoot but I only shoot pelagics as the reefs have heavy fishing pressure being so close to the city. Fish commonly shot include king and queen mackerel, kingfish, as well as amberjack, dorado and even billfish if you get out on a boat. Bottoms would incluse tasselfish, grunter, bronzebream, rockcod, rubberlips and a bunch more. Check out www.spearfishingsa.co.za which gives a lot of info specific to the KZN area. I do not live very far from the Bluff and my brother still lives there so give me a call when you arrive and we will sort out some diving
